FLCC AND TV COURSE OFFER ESL INSTRUCTION

     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 6, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College is offering guidance and educational tools to supplement a nationally televised instruction program for speakers of other languages who want to improve their English language skills by studying at home.
     
     The weekly, half-hour comedy/drama entitled "Crossroads Café" will air on FLTV Channel 12 at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 26. Each episode will be repeated on Sundays at 12:30 p.m. The program will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and on WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
     
     This 26-part series follows the lives of six characters of various ethnic backgrounds. In addition to learning English from the "Café" characters, viewers will gain insight into other aspects of U.S. culture, such as seeking citizenship and finding jobs.
     
     Audiences will learn to speak, read, and write English by watching the program, completing workbook assignments, and contacting their FLCC tutors each week. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

FLCC OFFERS ESL COURSE

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College will offer a free course for speakers of other languages who want to improve their English language skills. Classes begin Jan. 25, but people may register at any time, even after classes have started.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) course will meet as follows:
FLCC Geneva Center, 361 Main St., Geneva, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
FLCC Newark Center, 111 Drumlin Court, Newark, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6 - 8:30 p.m.
Agricultural Experiment Station, Sawdust Café, North St., Geneva, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

ESL classes will focus on speaking, reading, and writing English. Classes are small and friendly, and they offer students a great opportunity to learn about American culture and customs.

     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College will offer a free course this spring to prepare adults age 17 or older for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) exam. Both day and evening sessions will be offered, including two classes in Spanish. Classes begin Jan. 25, but people may register at any time, even after classes have started.
      Day classes in English will meet at the following locations and times:
     FLCC Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 - 11 a.m.
     FLCC Geneva Center, 361 Main St., Geneva, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
     FLCC Newark Center, 111 Drumlin Court, Newark, Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:30 - l1:30 a.m.
     The Salvation Army, 110 Saltonstall St., Canandaigua, Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
     Wayne Pre-Trial Services, 165 East Union St., Newark, Thursdays, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
      Evening classes in English will meet at the following locations and times:

FLCC AND TV COURSE OFFER GED PREPARATION

     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 6, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College is offering guidance and educational tools to supplement a television course that helps people prepare for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) exam. Beginning Jan. 24, "GED Connection" will air on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. on FLTV Channel 12, with repeat broadcasts on Saturdays from l to 2 p.m.
     
     Lessons will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
     
     Through the telecourse and FLCC, students will be able to view the lessons, complete workbook assignments, and speak with a tutor each week. The program covers the five major subject areas on the exam: writing, reading, social studies, science, and mathematics. Lessons focus on the workplace and demonstrate practical applications of the skills and knowledge learned for the GED exam. Assigned tutors will be available for assistance in all subject areas. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

FINGER LAKES CHORALE SEEKS SINGERS FOR SPRING CONCERTS

     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2005) - The Finger Lakes Chorale of Finger Lakes Community College is seeking new members for concerts on April 29 and May 1. Under the direction of Dennis Maxfield, the group will perform Charles Gounod's "Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cecile."
     Beginning Jan. 25, rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Room B-355 at FLCC's Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Auditions are not required; however, prior choral singing experience is necessary. A $5 non-credit registration fee is payable at the first rehearsal.
     Participants have the option of earning one college credit as a member of the Chorale by enrolling in, paying tuition costs for, and completing requirements for the course MUS 120 Finger Lakes Chorale.
