BOY HERO & STATE SENATOR TO BE HONORED AT YOUTHPOWER FUNDRAISING DINNER
|
At the Finger Lakes Council, Boy Scouts of America's 20th Anniversary Youthpower Dinner, Scout David Allman of Williamson will be awarded the medal of Merit from the National Council, and Senator Michael F. Nozzolio of Seneca Falls will be honored with the Finger Lakes Council's Distinguished Citizen Award. The dinner will be held Saturday, February 5 at Club 86 in Geneva.
In 2003, when he was just 13, Allman saved his older sister's life using knowledge learned in Scouting. The then First Class Scout in Troop 125, Williamson, applied the Heimlich Maneuver to dislodge the obstruction causing his sister to choke. Paramedics on the scene were impressed with Allman's quick thinking and skill, and believe that is the reason she is alive today.
Allman will be the first recipient of this level of lifesaving honor in the Finger Lakes Council. The medal is presented to a Scout who has "performed an act of service of a rare and exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others."
In addition to receiving the Distinguished Citizen Award, Nozzolio will participate in the ceremony honoring David Allman. He will recognize Allman's heroism on behalf of New York State. Nozzolio's senate district includes most of the Finger Lakes Council's four-county area, including Allman's home community of Williamson.
Youthpower Dinner Chair Robert A. Schick says, "All the youth of our area have benefited from Senator Nozzolio's untiring pursuit of ways to support youth programs in the Finger Lakes area. He has worked diligently to fund programs for many youth programs through the senate and privately. His programs to reduce and prevent crime, and in the area of victim's rights, are recognized nationally, as well as locally. He is truly deserving of this award."
Nozzolio is in his sixth term as New York State Senator. Before serving in the senate, Nozzolio served for 10 years in the New York State Assembly, where he rose to the position of Deputy Minority Leader.
Dinner attendance is by invitation to friends of scouting who agree to contribute at least $175 per person or $200 per couple to the council. Patron and corporate tables are also available. A silent auction will be held during the dinner. Invitations can be requested by calling the council service center in Geneva at 315-789-1166.
The Youthpower Dinner is an important fundraising event for the Geneva-based Finger Lakes Council. This year's goal is $60,000. The money supports council programs that serve nearly 5,000 youths and 2,000 volunteer adult leaders in the four-county area.
