Last week was a quiet week for school sports since it was exam week at the end of the first semester. However, a few things took place. One was a modified wrestling match. This team is again being coached by Sean Manns and Ron Langdon. They gave me the following roster. The eighth graders are Ashley Slate, Jason Batcheller, Tristen Ester, Travis Bevens, Billy Corino, Shane Wheeler, Jeff Parsons, Brock Smith, Nick Columbo, Brogan Hinkley, Mike Iannone, and Justin Buttaccio. The seventh grade list includes Dylan Dowdle, Bryan Combs, Shawn Spafford, Jesse Festa, Scott Sweet, Dylan Parmele, Aaron Burnett, Dan King, Jake Miller, Jacob DeVoll, Kaleb DeVoll, Cody Cooper, Tyler Brooks-Lambert, Austin Cummings, and Matt Barilla.
On Wednesday, Jan. 26, Midlakes hosted teams from North Rose-Wolcott and Penn Yan. Tyler Brooks-Lambert led off each round with a very strong and energetic bout; each time he jumped out to a big lead before pinning his opponent. Another lightweight, Matt Barilla, lost both his matches but showed determination and promise. Kaleb DeVoll easily defeated his first round opponent and tied his second round foe before being pinned.
Ashley Slate, Cody Cooper, Dan King, Travis Bevins, Jake Miller, Scott Sweet, and Bryan Combs had a rough time of it that afternoon, losing two matches each. Jacob DeVoll won both of his matches, one by pin and the other by decision. Nick Columbo pinned one opponent, was pinned by one. Brock Smith dominated one opponent and won with a pin; his other match ended in a tie.
Some of the wrestlers had only one match. Jesse Festa pinned his North Rose opponent in about 20 seconds. Billy Corino took longer, but the result was the same. Tristan Ester lost his match by a close 6-5 score. Shane Wheeler was ahead of his opponent, 2-1, before things slipped and he was pinned. Shawn Spafford never got the upper hand and was pinned in the 2nd period.
This team will be home again on February 7, hosting teams from Waterloo, Williamson, and Marcus Whitman.
The 8th grade girls hosted Waterloo on Friday, January 28, 2005. In reality the game was over in the first quarter. Waterloo was ahead, 15-6, after the first period, and we were never a threat. Waterloo players were quick, aggressive, with good hands, and some of them were excellent shooters. Our shooting was cold, and the ball seemed more slippery in our hands than in theirs. They even beat us at the free throw line; they shot 50%, and we shot 42%. The final score was 41-29., giving this team a 1-2 record early in the season. They will be home again this Friday, February 4 at 4:15 against Geneva. The 7th graders, home on February 1, can be seen again on Monday, Feb. 14.
The varsity boys will be home next on Friday, Feb. 4, and their last home game, Senior Night, is Feb. 8. The girls' Senior Night was last Saturday night. Sectional Seeding will be announced next week.
In the meantime, the Finger Lakes Times announced the updated league statistics, tabulated before the test week break.. Anthony Hall from Pal-Mac still leads in overall scoring. Tim Jopson has dropped in the standings since the rest of the league discovered he can shoot and is closely guarding him, but he's still averaging 13.4 points per game. Caleb Frederick comes in at 12.1 per game, and Kevin Lowry is averaging 9.9 points per game. His 21 three pointers are a large part of that.
