STUDENTS TACKLE SPORTS INDUSTRY ISSUES AT FLCC'S "SPORTS BUSINESS: MORE THAN A GAME"
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College will host a special career information session for those interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry. "Sports Business: More Than a Game" will be held on Saturday, March 5, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at FLCC's Canandaigua campus gymnasium. Registrations are required by Feb. 28.
From youth, adventure, and professional sports to international events such as the Olympic Games, sporting events draw millions of visitors and generate billions of dollars in economic impact. In fact, Street and Smith's Sportsbusiness Journal recently reported that in the United States alone, sports is a $213 billion dollar industry, making it the fifth largest industry in the nation.
Students will hear and interact with Scott Berchtold, vice president of communications for the Buffalo Bills; Dan Mason, general manager of the Rochester Red Wings; Robin Finnerty, director of events at the Monroe County Sports Development Corporation; and Brad Davies, sports talk show host from HotTalk 1280.
According to FLCC Professor of Sports and Tourism Studies Jeanne Fagan, "The sports and tourism industries are two of the most dynamic industries in America today, impacting economic growth within the thousands of communities coast to coast that host events and venues each year. This event is an excellent opportunity for participants to learn first-hand how to combine a passion for sports with the knowledge of business that is required for a successful career in this dynamic industry."
The session begins with presentations and an open forum for questions followed by a special luncheon during which participants can meet and talk with the sports professionals on a one-to-one basis. In the afternoon, attendees can talk to faculty and students and learn more about FLCC's sports and tourism studies degree program, and take a campus tour.
FLCC offers a degree in sports and tourism studies designed to prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions in pursuit of bachelor's degrees in sports management-related areas. FLCC graduates have transferred successfully to colleges such as SUNY Cortland, University of Massachusetts, St. John Fisher College, St. John's University, and Niagara University. Students who select the sports studies advisement area will be exposed, through field experiences, to career opportunities in the areas of sports marketing, sports management, event management, facilities management, and sports communications.
To register by Feb. 28, or for more information, go to www.flcc.edu/sportsbiz or call the FLCC Admissions Office at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7278.
