The modified wrestling team was very busy last week. On Monday they traveled to Canandaigua to meet wrestlers from Wayne and South Seneca as well as Canandaigua.
As usual some had two matches, some one, and some were injured or sick so didn't wrestle at all.
Austin Cummings and Travis Bevins each wrestled to a tie in their first match, then Austin was injured in his second match and Travis lost his second one. Ashley Slate, Jake Miller and Jeff Parsons also split, winning one and losing one decision.
Tristen Ester, Dylan Parmele and Nick Columbo each pinned one opponent and lost to another.
Bryan Combs and Brock Smith each won two matches, one by decision and one by pin. Jesse Festa won two matches, both by pin. Tyler Brooks-Lambert won two matches also, both by decision. Tyler and Brock had both gone to the Pal-Mac tournament the previous Saturday, and each won first place in his weight class, 92lbs. and 203lbs. respectively.
On Wednesday they returned to Canandaigua to wrestle a different team, plus teams from Gananda and Mynderse. Tyler Brooks-Lambert won two matches, both by decision. Matt Barilla also won two, one by decision and one by pin.
Jacob DeVoll, Scott Sweet, Shane Wheeler. Shawn Spafford, Brock Smith and Nick Columbo each recorded a pin. Kaleb DeVoll, Jake Miller, Tristen Ester, and Bryan Combs each won by decision. This team was hosting a match on Monday, February 7, and will do so again on Feb. 14.
The 7th grade girls played their home opener last Tuesday, Feb. 1 and lost to Penn Yan, 27-17. Coach Wescott they are constantly improving and have come a long way since practice started early in January. At that point there were 5 girls who had been playing on the travel team, and the rest had never really played the sport in an organized situation. They have been working hard, and now everyone can make a lay up and shoot foul shots (not that they always make them).
The roster consists of Jolyne Kane, Emmy Clark, Meghan Tillman, Liz Cooley, Liz Maloney, Shannon Murphy, Kelsey Knitter, Jaci Gross, Maressa Garver, Nicole Mattoon, Sara Maslyn, Morgan Doyle, and Hillary Rich. The next home game for this team will be Wednesday, February 9. The 8th grade will be home on February 8 and 11. These games are at 4:15 and nearly always in the middle school gym.
The varsity and jv boys' teams were back in town last Friday after a two week hiatus to host Marcus Whitman. The jv game started with an 8-1 run by Whitman. They were a bit taller, quicker and better at shooting, and it look as if a rout might be developing until Ben Sheppard finally found the net on two successive trips down the floor. Still we were down 15-8 at the end of the first period. We began the second quarter by making small inroads (a 6-2 run over the first 4 minutes) that became big inroads as we took an 18-17 point lead with 2 minutes left and finished the half ahead, 20-17.
     MIDLAKES SPORTS
We had a 29-22 lead with 1 minute to go in the third but a trey by them made things a bit tighter. The 4th quarter was dominated by defense that caused turnovers and not a lot of scoring until the free throw contest took over in the final minutes. We picked up 7 points there on 5/6 shooting from Ben and 2/2 from Clay Hemminger, whereas they made only 1 of 6 in the final period (and only 6 of 18 for the game), We shot 11/20 from the charity strip, not great but good enough that night. Ben was high scorer with 16 points; Albert Hollis, who had a rough start, finished with 11.
During halftime of each game there little dribblers performed some pretty tricky maneuvers. When your legs are that short dribbling between them has to be a real art, but some of them were quite good at it.
Between the games there was a special tribute to a special man. Coach Panek praised David Webb for his service to the basketball program in the past as well as his excellent camera work in recent seasons. On behalf of the Harwood Club, which he founded years ago, Sue Lincoln presented him with a plaque commemorating 34 years of "coaching and caring" at Midlakes.
The varsity game was exciting; the 52-38 final score suggests an easy victory, this was not. Our 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter was due in part to two quick field goals from Tim Jopson in the final 30 seconds. Our defense was quite good in the second quarter, but we were playing "over easy" with the ball. Fortunately they were not scoring from most of the opportunities. However they did hit a trey after 3 minutes had gone by and tied the game with another one. We held a 23-19 lead at halftime, thanks to our free throw shooting.
Another attack of "over easy" came in the third period, but again they weren't shooting well either so it didn't do much damage. Our 33-27 lead was plumped up by a trey from Tim as time expired. In the final period turnovers continued and fouls let Marcus Whitman come within 2 before we got settled down. Our free throw shooting saved us again. Caleb Frederick, who had been double teamed down low, began to shoot from the vicinity of the free throw line, either for a field goal or a free throw. He had 2 field goals for the game, but went 9/9 from the charity stripe. Doug VanderBrook had a similar night, 2 field goals and 8/8 from the line. (As a team we were 18/19 on free throws.) We went from a 45-38 lead with 1:48 to go to the 52-38 win. Tim led the way with 15 points.
If you are reading this on Tuesday, February 8, you can catch the boys' final home game of the regular season tonight starting at 6pm. The freshmen play their final game of the season on Thursday, February 10, at 4:15
