Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

Coach Hovey was delighted to tell me about the triumph of her varsity cheerleading squad. On Saturday, February 5, at Marcus Whitman, they captured 1st place in the Finger Lakes Division II league. This is the first time EVER that Midlakes has won the league cheerleading title. They accomplished this by beating host Marcus Whitman by 3 points and paid them back for last year when Marcus Whitman won, beating us by 1 point. Congratulations to all concerned. You always look great to me.
On Monday, Feb. 7, the modified wrestlers hosted Williamson, Marcus Whitman and Waterloo and enjoyed a great deal of success. Kaleb DeVoll, Jesse Festa and Brock smith each won both their matches by pins. Tyler Brooks-Lambert, Jacob DeVoll and Bryan Combs also won their two matches, one by decision and one by pin. Tristen Ester won both of his matches by decision.
Aaron Burnett won one match by decision and wrestled his other opponent to a tie. Nick Columbo, Travis Bevins, and Dan King each won one match with a pin. Matt Barilla, Ashley Slate, Scott Sweet, Billy Corino and Jeff Parsons each won one match by decision.
On Wednesday this team traveled to Victor to compete against wrestlers from Victor, Lyons and Red Jacket. Three wrestlers forgot their uniforms so couldn't compete, but many others had a good afternoon. Tyler Brooks-Lambert won twice, both by pin. Tristen Ester also won two matches, one by pin and the other by decision. . That gave each of them four wins for the week.
Dan King tied one match, lost the other. Austin Cummings, Jake Miller and Shane Wheeler each pinned one opponent. Austin and Jake lost their other matches; Shane only had one. Kaleb DeVoll, Jacob DeVoll, Travis Bevins, and Scott Sweet each won one match by decision.
Waterloo was the visitor for the final home game of the regular season for the jv and varsity boys. Waterloo's seniors, one cheerleader and 5 players, were recognized and given pale orange carnations. Our seniors received carnations with blue ribbons to give to their parents.
Jennifer Heidmann, Ashley Barber, Tabbitha Beckens, Jerrica Darling, and Crystal Burchim are the senior cheerleaders. Most of these girls have spent the last four years on the varsity squad and will be missed. Manager Kyle LaVare and players Tim Jopson, Andrew Flood, Kevin Lowry, Doug VanderBrook, and Zack Marion were also recognized. With the exception of newcomer Tim these guys have also been very important pieces in the Midlakes basketball program and it will seem odd to not have them on the floor next year.
The jv game was a bit of a surprise to me. The Waterloo squad had more height than we did, but we proved that speed, agility, and shooting prowess are more than a match for height alone. Waterloo had a 6-5 lead after 4 minutes, but that period ended with us ahead, 9-6. Waterloo again took the lead early in the 2nd period, and we traded the lead until Ben Sheppard hit a three to give us a bit of a cushion. We built on that for a ten point lead (24-14) at the half. Three-pointers helped them put together a 10-6 run to start the second half, but we recovered. Despite a spate of momentary carelessness we won fairly easily, 48-36. Ben was high scorer with 16; Billy Hanvey was next with 12, 10 of which came in the second half.
The varsity game proved that height can dominate when it comes on someone whose athletic talents are pretty good already and constantly improving and that speed, agility, and shooting prowess are always key. Caleb Frederick put in 18 points that night, 14 from the low post, four from the charity stripe. Tim Jopson added 16, mostly with drives down the lane, four from resulting free throws. Doug VanderBrook, who had difficulty with his shot from the floor, made 6 free throws in his 10 points.
Everything seemed to be working quite well, and we took an 18-10 point lead after one quarter. Then we hit a slow down, and two treys helped them close to within 5, 28-23 at the half. We forced turnovers early in the second half but couldn't convert. It seemed like we were trying out for the Globetrotters with the fancy passing and ball handling. Fortunately they weren't shooting well, but the score was 34-30 when a slam dunk by Caleb ignited the team and the crowd. Waterloo didn't cave, but Jordan Wilson's three-pointer at the buzzer gave us 45-34 lead at the end of the third period. Both defenses were active in the final eight minutes, and neither offense was able to make a run. The final score was a 66-56 Midlakes win.
I was finally able to see a 7th grade girls' game last Wednesday. It's always a shock each year to see their first game because it's such a slow pace compared to any of the other teams' games. Wayne was ahead, 3-2, after one period, but we had tied the score at 6 by the half. We were ahead, 12-10, after three quarters, but they tied the score at the 5:30 mark of the final period and took the lead 30 seconds later. They never relinquished it and beat us by a 16-12 score.
The 8th grade girls hosted Mynderse on Friday, February 11, and the score was tied at 8 after one period. Mynderse had a very quick and opportunistic point guard who forced a lot of turnovers and grabbed several steals. They also had a quiet but very effective outside shooter, and they outscored us 17-3 to take a commanding 25-11 lead at the half. We made a 13-4 run of our own in the third and cut into their lead, but they were still ahead by 5 after three quarters, 29-24.
Thanks in large part to Jayne Petzoldt who scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, we were able to tie the game at 33 with 2:25 to go in the game. The 9-4 run was capped by 2 free throws from Crysta Baroody, who also pulled down some crucial rebounds to go with her 7 points. Kristin McGregor's two free throws gave us the lead, but they quickly tied it at 35. Kaila Fox made a basket to let us retake the lead and sealed the 38-33 win with a free throw.
The freshmen played their final game of the season last Thursday against Penn Yan. We were shooting pretty well and were active on defense, helping us to an 18-13 lead after one quarter. We started the second quarter with a shooting slump but our defense and rebounding remained strong, keying a 21-6 scoring difference that gave us a comfortable 39-19 lead at the half.
Zack Hicks, who had 12 points in the first half, spent most of the second half on the bench in foul trouble. Fortunately we were able to keep pace. Three treys helped them score 16 points in the third period, but we scored 18, getting contributions from all 6 of the remaining players. Fortunately Zack came off the bench for a few minutes to score 6 more points because we only scored 9 points as a team in the final period. Also fortunately we were far enough ahead to win easily, 66-49.
By the time you read this the varsity girls will have hosted Way-Co last Saturday in a first round sectional game. We defeated them by a 51-33 score in the Tip-Off Tournament, but the game was much closer than the finals core would suggest. Hopefully the outcome was the same, however, and we can move on. The boys will be playing Wednesday, Feb. 16, against Attica at home, probably at 7pm . The 7th grade girls will be playing at 4:15 that day in the high school gym while the modified wrestlers will be hosting Newark, Victor, Sodus and Whitman in the middle school gym at the same time. The 7th graders will also play at home on Friday, and the 8th graders will be home on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
