AL PARKER MEMORIAL AWARD By Nelson Acquilano
|

On April 25th of 1993, the Finger Lakes area lost a very dear friend and the region lost a very strong addictions professional, Alonzo Parker.
Al was a friend and sponsor to the field, and was one of the most well known and effective counselor in this whole region. Through his years, he literally worked with thousands of alcoholics at the Clifton Springs Program, Park Ridge Chemical Dependency Program, at the Hemlock Holistic Health Center, and at FLACRA.
In his memory and with the permission of Reta Parker, his wife, the Council of Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes established the Al Parker Memorial Award for outstanding professional service in April 1994.
Al was known for his gentle and caring manner and willingness to extend extra effort to reach out and help someone in the recovery process. His work has had a positive impact, literally, upon thousands of alcoholics and families in the region, and many today are alive and enjoy life and recovery as a result of his commitment.
The Al Parker Award is presented to those who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication and delivered outstanding service to the profession of alcoholism/chemical dependency and who have demonstrated participation, commitment or involvement in activities on behalf of individuals and families affected by addiction.
A recipient of this recognition shows competence and compassion, and has demonstrated excellence in service to those in need. It is a recognition and demonstration of appreciation to those who make significant contributions and who really do make a difference for those who suffer from addiction.
In 2005, the Board of Directors of the Council on Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes voted unanimously to present the award to the employees of the Finger Lakes Addictions Counseling and Referral Agency (FLACRA). FLACRA operates an Addictions Treatment Outpatient Program in Ontario, Schuyler, Wayne and Yates counties, and an Addictions Crisis Center, Community Residences and Supportive Living Apartments for those recovering from addiction. FLACRA is celebrating 32 years of service, and assists some 3,000 individuals and families each year in their efforts to recover from addiction.
In selecting the employees of FLACRA as a group to receive this award, the Board of the Council noted the team approach, consistency in work, and outstanding community involvement and willingness by both the support staff, administration and clinical staff of the organization. FLACRA has also historically and repeatedly surpassed the standards of quality programming established by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), the state authority for alcoholism and substance abuse services in the provision of treatment services.
FLACRA is proud and honored to have received this award.
