PHIL LOSSIFER

I had a conversation with two people recently, one a father whose child was attendin' El Swanko College, an' a student of some university. What follows ain't nice, struck in m' craw! As a veteran, whose parents' culture said we should honor our country, it was disappointin'. However, it's prevalent t'day among our elite an' their offspring.
Some background: Durin' the Civil War those drafted could pay someone t' serve fer 'im. When the draft happened in WW 2, there were exemptions. If one was essential t' home war effort, such as farmers, or had a large family, they were not s'posed t' be called. However, many were, they went. After the war many battles were fought in bars twixt those who went, an' those who din't.
One may feel service t' our country should be a given. The draft has been discontinued, an' reserves like National Guard were s'posed t' make up part of a military response. Not a military adventure, like 'Nam, where his'try has proven it was ego an' propaganda that drove it. National service should be Peace Corp, religious groups, served overseas, an' military. This requirement should be universal, an' even those with disabilities could find some area of service. This won't happen, an' reasons are as follows:
Durin' 'Nam, deferments were prevalent, specially among elitist able t' keep kids in college until past draft age or the war was over. It was an inequity bragged about by elitists!
When graduatin' after Second World War, jobs were hard t' find. Many parents din't have the wherewithal t' send kids t' college, so military was an option. Fortunately GI Bill helped many, an' Korean War enabled me t' git m' education (no remarks please). The all-volunteer military was s'posed t' give young 'uns the means t' go t' college. Many of poor snapped up that offer quicker'n scat, since was a way outta back roads of poverty. They went in, got out. There's no statistics showin' how many ex-service people used their education values.
The two incidents mentioned above are common. The student stated if draft started, he would start for the Canadian border. The parents stated he had a "Plan B" fer his child, although he din't define, don't take much imagination where his child was goin'. They din't want t' serve, or their child t' serve their country despite benefits they'd been given!
M' question t' people whom have prospered from our freedoms, are you willin' t' have yer kids defend what we have? O'Reilly sed he'd serve, not his kid. He answered Michael Moore's question. Apparently answer is no, let others do it. This isn't a "nuff sed" one, it's a question many will answer with their feet, or influence! Even our leaders refuse t' acknowledge our GIs an' Iraqi women pulled their fat outta the fire! What's yer answer, elitists?
