The varsity wrestlers have been busy in spite of the fact that they haven't been visible at Midlakes. On February 12 at the Finger Lakes Central League Tournament we enjoyed a great deal of success. Morgan Hoven at 135lbs., Enan Congdon at 215 and Chris Teed at 275 lbs. all finished in first place. Adam Biesenbach was second at 152lbs.
Jeremy Denisi and Gabe Gigliotti were third at 160lbs. and 130lbs. respectively. Steve Rathbone at 112 and Josh Moracco at 171 finished 4th. At the end of the day cross-over matches were held with Finger Lakes West winners. Morgan and Chris won and were named overall champions while Enan came in second.
On February 18 and 19 the Sectional Tournament was held at Bath. Morgan Hoven, Enan Congdon and Chris Teed finished second in their respective weight classes. Chris Stobie and Adam Biesenbach each finished fourth. These wrestlers earned the right to go to State Qualifiers last weekend (Feb. 25-26) at SUNY Brockport.
The only game at the school last week was played by the 8th grade girls. We hosted Penn Yan. Vacations and illness depleted the ranks somewhat, but we were not deterred. We had a height advantage at several positions and were meshing well, so we jumped out to a 15-2 advantage after one period. The second quarter was much less explosive but we still kept a comfortable, 19-8, lead. Our scoring continued to lag somewhat compared to the first quarter, whereas they seemed to be warming up and outscored us in the third. We recovered to return that favor and won comfortably, 41-30
Crysta Baroody, Gina Phamisith, Kristin McGregor, Allison Strub, and Kaila Fox were the starters that day, and they all scored. Crysta was high scorer for us with 14 points.
At the boys' senior night back on February 8, Athletic Director Lyle Dixon announced that Midlakes has 5 scholar-athlete teams this year so far. To determine this honor the averages of a specific number of players on the team have to average out above 90. The girls' soccer team had a collective 93.065 average. Marissa Gray, Taryn Millard, Sarah Sweeney, Sarah Bessey, Jeannette Frederick, Whitney Dixon, Ashley Rooney, Kyla Smith, Allie Knitter, Maureen Cooley and Abby Oaks contributed their averages to win this honor.
The boys' soccer team's collective average was 91.269. Contributing to that were Jason Adams, Ben Bengston, Travis Buttaccio, Aaron Dorman, Andy Galens, Riley O'Neill, Ben Sheppard, Ryan Phillips, Jon Briggs, Brett Adams, Travis DeWind, and Adam Malchoff.
Also from the fall sports line-up, the girls' volleyball team won this recognition. Lindsey Boehmler, Hannah Young, Erin Butch, Katie Litts, Becky Rouland, Missy Wells-Spicer, Jane Petzoldt, and Brenna Cavanaugh combined their averages for a 93.136 average.
Both varsity basketball teams were also named scholar athlete teams. Doug VanderBrook, Greg VanderBrook, Andrew Flood, Aaron Dorman, Ben Bengston, Zach Marion and Jesse DeBoover combined for a 92.619 average.
The girls' team had the highest average of all the teams, 93.223. Katie Litts, Alex Oaks, Sarah Sweeney, Marissa Bunce, Whitney Dixon, Rachel Shedenhelm, and Liz Donk were included in the count.
Congratulations to the teams and to the individuals who excel in the classroom while working hard in the sports venues. The boys' volleyball team was awarded the league's sportsmanship award.
