Midlakes Sports

The modified teams and the qualifying varsity wrestlers have been active, but it's definitely much calmer on the sports scene these days.
The 8th grade girls played their last home game last Tuesday, March 1, against Victor. Even though this team played twice during the previous week's break, we seemed sluggish and out of rhythm. An 8-0 run over the first 3:30 minutes of the first period gave Victor a nice cushion and a 10-2 lead. They caused a lot of turnovers, and we continued to shoot poorly when we had the chance, leading to a 17-4 score after two periods.
In the third, we seemed to awaken - we shot better and were more active on defense - but we couldn't make a dent in their lead, which was 27-13 after three periods. The more active defense gave us more rebounds, but once we grabbed a rebound and scored on a put-back in their basket, not that it made any difference in the outcome. They began to make some incredibly lucky shots, too, which sometimes happens when everything is going your way. We cooled off in our shooting (not that we were ever hot) and allowed them to take a 40-20 lead before getting serious again, but the final score was 41-25. (This was one of those 5 quarter games; the score at the end of four was 35-18.) If we had been able to score early we might have given them a contest; this one was truly over in the first seven minutes.
The 7th grade team was able t finish the season with a home game last Friday, March 4 against Pal-Mac. This team has vastly improved over the season: the energy level is up, the speed of execution has improved, and the girls are shooting better. There are days, however, when even though you run the plays and take good shots the ball doesn't drop through the net. This was one of those days when we could have scored many more points.
The game was tied at 9 after one period, and we took a 19-15 lead to the locker room at the half, thanks to a buzzer beater by Meghan Tillman. A more aggressive defense resulted in a series of fouls called on us early in the third period, giving them possessions and eventually free throws. They took a 22-21 lead late in the third, thanks to a free throw, and while we had scored 19 in the first 14 minutes, we only managed 2 in that period.
Fortunately Pal-Mac did not shoot free throws very well that afternoon (4/15), and we regained the lead early in the fourth on a field goal by Meghan and pushed to a five point lead, then watched it slip away to 1 with turnovers. With 15.5 seconds to go we had a 29-28 lead, but Pal-Mac had the ball. We managed to keep them from scoring, finally got possession, and time expired as Liz Maloney started a fast break up the court, allowing the girls to end the season on a winning note, their third of the season. Meghan had 8 points, Jolyne Kane had 6, Shannon Murphy and Kelsey Knitter each had 4. Liz Maloney, Morgan Doyle, and Emmy Clark each added two points.
Last Wednesday the modified wrestling team traveled to Wayne to compete against teams from Wayne, North Rose-Wolcott, and Gananda. Coach Manns reported "a long snowy trip there and back," but the members enjoyed a fair amount of success while there. Coach Manns figured some wrestlers were "rusty from vacation," because there were a lot of pins. Matt Barilla, Jacob DeVoll, Ashley Slate, Jason Batcheller, Jesse Festa, Jeff Parsons, Shawn Spafford, and Nick Columbo each won a match by pinning their opponent. Tristen Ester and Scott Sweet each won their matches, one by decision and one by pin.
Tyler Brooks-Lambert won both of his matches by decision. Austin Cummings, Travis Bevins, Dylan Dowdle, Bryan Combs, and Mike Iannone each won one match by decision, and Patrick Middlebrook wrestled an opponent to a tie.
Last Friday the team traveled to Geneva for their final meet of the season, competing against teams from Canandaigua, Lyons and Geneva. There were not so many pins that trip. Tyler Brooks-Lambert won two matches, one by decision and one by pin. Travis Bevins won two matches by decision. Justin Buttaccio also had two matches, one was a tie and the other he won by pin.
Kaleb DeVoll, Jacob DeVoll, Tristen Ester, and Jesse Festa each won a match by decision. Jeff Parsons, Brock smith, and Nick Columbo each won a match by pin. Bryan Combs beat his opponent by technical fall (this is when you get 15 points ahead of your opponent so they stop the match, something like the mercy rule in softball).
At the state qualifying wrestling tournament Midlakes was represented by Morgan Hoven, Enan Congdon, Chris teed, Chris Stobie and Adam Biesenbach. Morgan, wrestling at 135 lbs., made it all the way to the semi-finals before losing to an Alfred Almond wrestler who eventually won that weight class. The wrestling season is over now, along with the basketball season. These sports will be holding their end-of-season awards nights in the next week.
