PHIL LOSSIFER

I Know I shouldn't' do this, become critical of paper editors, but here goes. Bear with me on this.
D&C editorial page Editor Mr. James Lawrence, hadda column "When it Becomes Personal." His article sed our state legislators're miffed at D&C's articles 'bout their local legislators. One stated he'd been called a "crook" by one of his constituents However:
Over the past years I've complained 'bout our state legislators, their obedience t' our state's triumvirate leadership. Legislators, out of fear, have acquiesced their responsibilities t' constituents by not challenging leaders. Those brave enuf t' do so, lose perks like committee chairs, or special accommodations. They are tol' what, where, and how t' set in the wheat field o' politics while leaders divide tax money.
Readin' other sources find many newspapers jumpin' on the bandwagon questionin' district legislators. Well, ain't it 'bout time? High state taxes drove industry out of state. People willin' t' work hadta seek jobs in other states. But, there was a reverse influx, called Medicaid people. Out-of-state poor know our state benefits exceed their home states', migrate here, for Medicaid, often encouraged by their home state social workers. Medicaid indirectly subsidizes Marts health benefits since part-time workers become eligible for benefits if they're under the poverty level guidelines. Another fraud is under the table employment, or unmarried parents. That's another story.
State legislators ain't gonna touch Medicaid at the people level. They'll use subterfuges like cuttin' hospital and vendor payments. They, includin' Monroe County, know where the votes are, both recipients and state workers interests. They'll make a lotta noise. When push comes t' shove, if it does, welfare rights groups'll git the courts t' overturn any changes reducin' benefits.
Lawrence stated none of the paper's articles were personal. Well, why not? After all, legislators git paid good bucks t' waltz w' Albany, expenses paid, so much a mile, t' be ordered, an' that's correct word, how things're gonna be. Silver an; Bruno have ways fer cooperation. Question: Where y' editors been fer the last fifty years; why now? I've watched state politics fer years, now y' recognizin' the problem? And instead o' bein' peoples' watchdogs, y've become govmint supporter couch potatoes. Otherwise y'd been all over this like fudge on ice cream. Don't think yer alone, there's national papers who'll support verbatim a legislator's policies. Why? Reality an' money. Never nuff sed on this, since ever one got their own opine on govmint.
The Iraq election was wonderful, but it's success was based upon our troops an' Iraqi women who led the way inta votin' booths. How many Americans would ignore violence threats? We have kids ready t' head fer Canada if the draft comes back, most with the approval o' their rich parents. Hear it alla the time. Want benefits, don't wanna s'port it. Common people, our soldiers pulled administration's fat outta the fire. Nuff sed?
