Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

The jv wrestling tournament, held Saturday, December 11, attracted teams from Brighton, Pal-Mac, Webster Thomas, North Rose-Wolcott, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Geneva, Gananda, Fairport, Wayne, Canandaigua, Pittsford and Penn Yan. We entered 16 wrestlers in 9 weight classes.
Chris Teed and Nick Miller finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the 275lb. class. Mike Beck finished 2nd at 145lbs, Jesse Goodman was 4th in the same weight class. Josh Morocco was 4th in the 171lb. class. Other participants from Midlakes were: Chris Stobie and Steve Rathbone at 112lbs.; Dan Jones at 130lbs.; Steve Kemp at 140lbs.; Tyler Turner, Eric Minns and Robert Barber at 152lbs.; Nick Newland and Trent Jones at 171lbs.; Aaron Congdon at 189lbs.; and Bryant Rice at 215lbs.. Some of these boys will see action when the varsity and jv wrestlers host Penn Yan on Wednesday, December 22 starting at 6pm.
The 7th graders hosted Marcus Whitman last Tuesday, December 14, in a game that took a while to develop. Both teams had trouble scoring; we ran some nice plays with good moves and no desired results. The score was 10-4 in favor of Midlakes after one quarter and 12-8 at the half. Whitman started the second half with a score within the first 30 seconds, then Midlakes went on a 14-0 run, and Whitman scored again at the buzzer for a 26-12 score after three periods. In the 4th their only scores came at the free throw stripe, and we won easily, 36-19. Kyle Consolie was hot that afternoon with 12 points, all in the second half. This team plays at home next on Tuesday, December 28, at 10am.
The varsity and jv girls were home against Whitman the following night. Again each team started slowly. We tallied 8 points then Whitman tied it with 1:30 to go in the first period, and suddenly our good shots weren't dropping. Sloppy passing, a problem on and off through the entire game, marred the second period along with a string of traveling calls that kept us from capitalizing on steals. That plus a stifling Whitman defense took us from a 4 point lead midway through the first period to being down 7 (20-13) at the half. Aerica Maslyn with 5 points was our only scorer in the second period.
A quick 5-2 run to start the second half cut into the lead somewhat, but we couldn't sustain the momentum. Another flurry of opportunities kept the score close (32-28) as the third period ended. Whitman did their early 4th period scoring at the foul line, and we began to chip away at their lead by making baskets from the floor.
Whitman still led, 37-36, with three minutes to go, and then there was a lull in the scoring. Shannon Sweeney put us ahead at the 1:50 mark, but Whitman tied 20 seconds later. Free throws gave us a 42-39 lead with 30 seconds to go, but they had closed to 42-41 with 4 second left. Meredith Burns, who had plenty of practice at the foul line, inexplicably missed 3 in the final minute, including 2 with 3 seconds to go, but we pulled out a 42-41 win. Meredith finished with 9 points, 5 in free throws.
The varsity game also had a slow start; it's as though each team needs to thaw out and get moving. Both teams suffered through turnovers to begin, but Whitney Dixon had success driving the lane and pulling up for the short jumper and Liz Donk hit a three to give us 12-6 cushion at the end of 8 minutes.
They made some quick steals and good shots to start the second, and suddenly we couldn't hang onto the ball. Marissa Bunce hit two treys that kept us ahead, but much of this quarter resembled a game of hot potato. Still, when the buzzer sounded, we had extended our lead to 25-15.
Whitman went on a 5-1 run to start the second half. Three minutes in we had only managed two free throws, and Whitman kept whittling away, outscoring us 12-8 in the third quarter. They kept coming in the fourth, and we were looking at a 42-40 score with less than 3 minutes to go. Whitney sealed the win with 3 made free throws in the final 40 seconds. Whitman's miss at the other end was rebounded by Stephanie Groff, who was fouled and made both shots to pad the 50-42 win. The girls play at home again on Jan. 7 against Canandaigua.
The freshmen took on Waterloo on Friday, December 17 in a "wild and crazy" game. Zach Hicks hit a 3 to start, and we wasted time trying to replicate that. When David Rivera started bounce the ball inside to Jared Schoonerman we picked up a quick four and settled in. The first quarter ended with a 14-13 score, Waterloo ahead.
David started the second period with a 3 of his own to give us the lead. A series of steals in the middle of the period made things exciting, but we only made one basket from them. We did, however, increase our lead to 7 by halftime, 27-20.
David started the third period with another 3 (he had 5 of them for the afternoon), and Zack followed with one of his own. Waterloo kept chipping away at the 13 point lead and had cut it to 6 as the third period ended (44-38).
In the fourth period we kept trying three-pointers that weren't dropping. Meanwhile, Waterloo engineered several steals and they were rebounding more efficiently. They tied the score at 54 with 1.4 seconds to go, and we went to overtime.
We missed the front end of three 1-1 situations in that fourth quarter and generally suffered a cool shooting spell compared with them. In the four minute overtime period we had 10 free throw opportunities and made only 3 of them while they made 4 of 8 including 2 that gave Waterloo a 60-59 lead with 26 second to go, and that was the final score. This team will play at home again on December 28, at 10am, against Livonia.
The 8th grade boys and the jv and varsity teams play on Tuesday, December 21 against Penn Yan at home. The Christmas Tournament begins on December 29 with jv games in the afternoon beginning at 1pm and varsity games in the evening beginning at 6pm.
