FLCC ANNOUNCES FACULTY AND STAFF APPOINTMENTS
     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2004) - Finger Lakes Community College recently announced the following faculty and staff appointments:
     Douglas Albert of Hemlock has been appointed assistant professor of computing sciences. Albert has worked at the Edison Technical and Occupational high school, teaching computer-related classes, while adjunct teaching computer classes at FLCC. Albert obtained a master's degree in education at Nazareth College, a bachelor's degree in marketing at Rochester Institute of Technology, an associate's degree in medical technology, and Cisco courses at Genesee Community College.
     Sara Brown of Canandaigua joins FLCC as an instructor of sociology. Previously, Brown taught sociology at Keene State College, Monroe Community College, St. John Fisher College, and the Rochester Institute of Technology as an adjunct professor. She received a master's degree at the University of London, Goldsmiths' College, and a bachelor's degree in sociology at Northeastern University.
     Cathy Cushman of Pittsford has been hired as a temporary instructor of music. Cushman was a professor of music at Hartwick College, adjunct instructor at Nazareth College, and an adjunct instructor at FLCC since 1995. She has a master's degree in higher education administration from SUNY Brockport, a master's degree in musicology from the Eastman School of Music, and a bachelor's degree in music from Colby College.
     Barbara Chappell of Newark has been appointed as an assistant professor of human services. Chappell has worked at FLCC as a technical specialist in the social sciences department since 1985. She received a master's degree in social work from Roberts Wesleyan College and has a C.S.W. from the State of New York Department of Education. She has a bachelor's degree in social work from Nazareth College as well as an associate's degree in human services from FLCC.
     Ines Draskovic of Rochester has been appointed as a temporary instructor of music. Draskovic has worked at FLCC as an adjunct instructor of music since 1996, as well as an adjunct instructor at St. John Fisher College. She received a doctorate of musical arts in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, a master's degree of music in performance from Ithaca College, and a bachelor's degree of music at the University of Musical Arts in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
     Malcolm Kirby of Pittsford has been hired as an instructor of music recording. Kirby has been an adjunct instructor in music recording technology at FLCC and has a wide variety of experience in music recording and production. He received a bachelor's degree in music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and has studied at the Manhattan School of Music.
     Karen Van Keuren of Canandaigua joins FLCC as the director of grants development. Previously, Van Keuren has worked at the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board as the regional youth systems coordinator. Additionally, she worked as a program coordinator and instructor at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. She received a master's degree in adult education from Buffalo State College and has a bachelor's degree in education/art from SUNY Oswego.
     Clinton Krager of Binghamton has been hired as an instructor of biology. Krager has taught biology at Broome Community College, Luzerne Community College, Midlands Technical College, Coker College, and the University of South Carolina. He received a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of South Carolina.
     Nanette Levin of Potter has been hired as a part-time business adviser for the Small Business Development Center at FLCC. Levin owns Fulcrum Communications, a marketing firm that provides cost-effective, creative solutions for small businesses and non-profits. She received a bachelor's degree in English and political science from the University of Rochester.
     Rosemary Lowden of Farmington has been appointed as assistant dean of student services and enrollment management. Lowden has worked at FLCC as a student services specialist in the student services office since 1999. She received a master's degree in counselor education from SUNY Brockport and a bachelor's degree in public relations at Utica College of Syracuse University.
     Melissa Miller of Bloomfield has been hired as a full-time instructor of biology. Miller has been an adjunct professor of biology at FLCC since 2000. Miller previously owned and operated her own chiropractor practice, the "Center for Health" in Seneca Falls. She has a doctorate of chiropractic from the New York Chiropractic College, a bachelor's degree in physical fitness from Northern Kentucky University, and an associate's degree from FLCC in therapeutic massage and integrated health care.
     Trista Merrill of Farmington has been hired as an assistant professor of English. Merrill has taught English classes at SUNY Binghamton, Keuka College, and Genesee Community College. She received a doctorate and a master's degree in English from SUNY Binghamton, as well as a bachelor's degree in secondary education and English from SUNY Potsdam.
     Ryan Therkelsen of Farmington joins FLCC as a temporary instructor of mathematics. Therkelsen taught mathematics at San Diego State University and the University of Oregon. He has a master's degree in mathematics from San Diego State University and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa.
     Heather Voelkl of Dundee has been hired as coordinator of secondary programs. Previously, Heather Voelkl student taught at Geneseo Central School and at Frederick Douglass Middle School. She obtained a bachelor's degree of education at SUNY Geneseo.
     Robert Wink of Canandaigua has been hired as an assistant professor of environmental conservation and horticulture. Wink has taught conservation classes at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (CESF), Syracuse University, and at the SUNY Ranger School. He has a doctorate in environmental forest biology and a bachelor's degree in forest biology and resources management from SUNY CESF.
FLCC REACHES HIGHEST FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT EVER IN HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
      CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2004) - Two honors courses at Finger Lakes Community College will give students the chance to explore philosophy, literature, and the arts. The first, a seminar entitled "The Hearth Project: A Writer's Retreat" will combine class time with required retreats at the FLCC Muller Field Station on Honeoye Lake.
      Led by Instructor of English Alton Jowers and Associate Professor of Philosophy John Talbot, the course will provide students with the opportunity to build a foundation in the humanities and then reinforce these experiences through an immersion in nature. The retreats will encourage interdisciplinary activities ranging from prose and poetry to painting and music while instilling a greater love and understanding of nature.
      This three-credit honors course (HON 100-90) will meet on the following days:
      Thursday, Jan. 27, 6:30 - 9:20 p.m.
      The weekends of Feb. 25-27; March 25-27; and April 22-24
      Additionally, Assistant Professor of English Curtis Nehring Bliss will be offering an honors class entitled "Seeker, Lover, Shadow, Healer: Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious in Literature and Art." This course will discuss the powerful images and symbols that influence the way we think, feel, and act. Through works of American art and literature, the class will discuss four of these archetypes and reflect on their role in our lives and in the whole of American culture. This course will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 - 9:20 p.m.
      FLCC honors courses are designed to present stimulating, enriching material through discussion and study in a manner that encourages critical thinking and creative self-expression. Students who successfully complete a series of honors courses may earn an honors certificate upon graduation, which may increase their transfer options to four-year institutions.

FLCC OFFERS SPRING 2005 CREDIT COURSES AT VA MEDICAL CENTER

     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2004) - Finger Lakes Community College is offering a variety of credit courses at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Canandaigua in the spring 2005 semester. Students may begin registering immediately for these courses, which will run from Jan. 31 through May 20. This FLCC site is located at 400 Fort Hill Ave., Building 36. The following credit courses are available:

FLCC ANNOUNCES SPRING 2005 SEMESTER REGISTRATION

     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2004) - Finger Lakes Community College announces walk-in registration for students enrolling on a part-time, non-matriculated basis for the spring 2005 semester. Spring courses begin Jan. 25, and registration will be held at the following times and locations:
     
     In Canandaigua: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Fridays 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., FLCC Registrar's Office, 4355 Lakeshore Drive.
     
     In Geneva: Jan. 12, Registration: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., Placement Testing: 2:30 p.m., FLCC Geneva Center, 361 Main St., (315) 789-6701.
     
     In Newark: Jan. 13, Registration: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., Placement Testing: 2:30 p.m., FLCC Newark Center, 111 Drumlin Court, (315) 331-9098.
     
     Freshman English (ENG 101) and foreign language courses require placement testing prior to registration. Testing for ENG 101 will be held in Geneva and Newark, as indicated above.      Students with no formal instruction in foreign language may take the beginning language courses (SPN 101, FRN 101). Students who have had previous formal instruction in foreign language should take the foreign language exam. It may be taken at the FLCC library anytime during regular working hours. Students who place in an upper-level language course and successfully complete it with a grade of C or better are eligible to receive three additional credits for the lower-level language course which immediately precedes it.

     FLCC ANNOUNCES SPRING 2005 SEMESTER REGISTRATION

     Students registering for one to 11 credit hours (as part-time students not seeking a degree) may register during walk-in registration or by mail using the mail-in registration form in the FLCC Spring Course Listing Publication. The form can also be downloaded from the FLCC Web site at www.flcc.edu/registrar. Degree-seeking students or those who wish to register full-time (those who are enrolling in 12 credit hours or more) are not eligible to register by mail and must register in person. For registration information, contact the FLCC Admissions Office at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7278.
     
     Students born on or after Jan. 1, 1957, and registering for six or more credit hours must provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella in order to attend classes. Additionally, New York state requires that all students enrolled in six or more credits (except Gemini) receive information on meningococcal meningitis disease and sign and return a response form indicating their decision to obtain or decline the vaccination.      When registering, Ontario County residents must present identification with signature and non-Ontario County residents must obtain a Certificate of Residence from their county treasurer.

FLCC REACHES HIGHEST FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT EVER IN HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (December 7, 2004)- For the fall 2004 semester, Finger Lakes Community College reached its highest full-time enrollment ever in its 36-year history. A total of 2,637 full-time students enrolled, which is an increase of 105, or 4.1 percent, over fall 2003 enrollment. Enrollment of part-time students increased by 2.6 percent to 2,247 making a total enrollment of 4,884.
     Sixty-four percent of all full-time students and 21 percent of all part-time students have enrolled in the College's associate in arts and associate in science transfer degree programs designed to prepare graduates to pursue four-year degrees.
     More than 83 percent of all full-time enrollment comes from the five county region: Ontario (41 percent); Wayne (18 percent); Seneca (eight percent); Yates (eight percent); and Monroe (nine percent).
     "We believe that this increase in enrollment reflects the value of the education Finger Lakes Community College provides," said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president. "Our faculty and staff remain committed to providing personal attention to ensure students' success. Increased full-time enrollment illustrates the critical need for additional space in order to accommodate our increasing number of students." For two consecutive years the College has had to add temporary classrooms at its Canandaigua campus.
     Finger Lakes Community College enrolled its first class of 210 students in 1968. Today the College has grown considerably, offering more than 37 academic programs including nursing, criminal justice, therapeutic massage and integrated health care, sports and tourism studies, information technology, information systems, and biotechnology.
FLCC ANNOUNCES JAN PLAN REGISTRATION
     CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2004) - Registration for the three-week Finger Lakes Community College Jan Plan session is now underway, continuing through December 29.
     The session meets January 3 through January 21, allowing students to complete college credit courses in approximately three weeks. A complete listing of Jan Plan course offerings can now be viewed by visiting "WebAdvisor" at www.flcc.edu.
     To enroll in a Jan Plan course, students may use the mail-in registration form that is included in the FLCC Spring 2005 Course Listing Publication or can be downloaded from the FLCC Web site, www.flcc.edu. Students may also register in person by visiting the Registrar's Office Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Please note: the College is closed Nov. 24-26, Dec. 23-24, and Dec. 30-31 for the holidays.)
