The 8th grade team hosted its counterpart from Penn Yan last Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the afternoon - a prelude to the evening games between the jv and varsity teams. The 8th grade game was a real barn-burner.
Midlakes took an early 4 point lead that evaporated, leaving a tie at 10 with a minute to go in the first quarter; Travis Goodman gave us the lead (12-10) again as time expired. Little did any of us know, this was a portent of things to come.
Penn Yan had a bit of a height advantage, but Erin Kelly played an excellent defensive game - rebounding, blocking shots, and doing some scoring as well. He was helped in this by Harley Morales and Justin Huntsman. Sean Sweeney is a great point guard, delivering the ball, stealing it, scoring off a drive or a feed underneath or from the top of the key. It's surprising to me that they have a losing record, particularly since in the weekend travel team the same group is doing very well. Maybe they're tired after a day of school.
By the half we had regained a 20-14 lead, but their height helped them cut into it as the third quarter wound down and we were only up 30-28 as the third period ended. They had tied the game before a minute passed, and we traded baskets for a time, but their height was problematic, and we were usually the one making the tie. It was a struggle, but regulation ended with a 40-40 tie. The 3 min. OT was a defensive battle probably marred by fatigue since not much scoring occurred, and another 3 minutes was added to the board. That ended with the score tied at 47. A wild 3rd OT ensued. After free throws by Jordan Dutcher and Erin gave us a lead Penn Yan took it back then Harley tied the score at 52 with another free throw. In the 4th OT Jordan, Sean and Ben Uveges figured in the scoring for a 58-57 win.
The jv team also took Penn Yan to OT but lost, and the varsity team beat Penn Yan rather easily thanks to a great start.
The wrestling team also hosted Penn Yan last week; on Dec. 22 it was also Alumni Night. Randy, Andy, and Chris Pieters; Kurt Kelsey; Dave and Paul Smith; Steve Young; Brandon Taylor; Randy, Andy, and Chris Pieters; Kurt Kelsey; Dave and Paul Smith; Steve Young; Brandon Taylor; Dan Bourgeois; John Peck; Ron Raes; and Matt Maslyn showed up to shake hands with a current squad and cheer them on.
Bryant Rice started the evening match off with a pin in 1:29 minutes of the first period of the 215lb. match. Seth Smith, who was behind the entire 275lb. match, nearly pinned his opponent in the 3rd but was himself pinned. Then came a series of forfeits, some double but Billy Lathrop at 130lbs., Morgan Hoven at 140lbs., Mike Beck at 145lbs., Adam Biesenbach at 152lbs. and Josh Morocco at 171lbs. gave us points to establish an insurmountable lead. Jeremy Denisi won a technical fall with a 17-2 score after 35 seconds of the 2nd period. Aaron Congdon was pinned in the 2nd period of the 189lb. match, but it didn't affect the outcome, as we won, 47-12. I've noticed in the paper a lot of the teams in the league have similar experiences - a lot of forfeits, not many matches contested for scores.
Gananda and Red Jacket had brought jv wrestlers for some experience. We did well against these opponents also. Eric Minns pinned an RJ at 156lbs., Dan Jones won at 125 lbs. over a wrestler from Gananda, 6-2; Steve Kemp pinned his RJ opponent at 135lbs. in 1:49 of the first period; Adam Biesenbach pinned his 152lb. opponent in the second period; Trent Jones and Nick Newland pinned 171lb. opponents in the 1st period of their matches; Jesse Goodman was pinned in the 3rd period by his RJ opponent, and Bryant Rice was locked in a scoreless battle with a PY wrestler until he pinned him half way through the third period.
This home match (the second of only three this season not counting the Jan. 8 tournament) followed on the heels of a pretty successful outing at the Penfield tournament on Dec. 18. There were a lot of schools present, so wrestlers were divided into 3 groups with 8 in each for the purpose of bracketing, and we entered 2 and 3 wrestlers at some weights in the jv division.
Hence Nick Miller and Chris Teed both won 1st place medals at 275lbs.. Bryant Rice at 215, Aaron Congdon at 189, Nick Newland at 171, and Eric Minns at 152 all finished 3rd in their brackets. In the varsity division Morgan Hoven won 1st place at 140lbs., and Seth Smith was 4th at 275lbs.
This week the freshmen play at 10am on Tuesday, the 7th graders play at 10am on Wednesday (Dec. 29), and the boys' Christmas Tournament (this year sponsored by the area dairy farmers and connected businesses as the Legion sponsored the girls' Tip Off) begins at 1 pm with a jv game between South Seneca and Campbell-Savona, followed at about 2:30 by a Midlakes/School of the Arts jv game. That night at 6pm the varsity games begin with South Seneca vs. Campbell-Savona, and the later game will feature Midlakes against Park School at approximately 7:30. Thursday's match-ups will be determined by the results of Wednesday's games, but the times remain. The championship games will be at 2:30 and 7:30.
