FLCC CAMPUS-COMMUNITY COALITION MEMBERS SPEAK AT SUNY CONFERENCE
FLCC CAMPUS-COMMUNITY COALITION MEMBERS SPEAK AT SUNY CONFERENCE
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Dec. 21, 2004) - Two employees of Finger Lakes Community College recently presented on behalf of the FLCC Campus-Community Coalition at a conference entitled "Enhancing Student Success: Best Practices in Student Affairs" held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

More than 180 registrants participated in the conference, sponsored by the State University of New York Office of University Life. Dean of FLCC Student Services and Enrollment Management Carol S. Urbaitis and Director of FLCC Student Health Services Karen Z. Stein, R.N., M.S., CASAC, presented "The Risk and Protective Framework for Understanding Community College Student Retention." In this presentation, they provided an overview of student health behavior data and described strategies developed and implemented by the FLCC Campus-Community Coalition to identify and prevent factors often leading to student dropout, substance abuse, and other negative behaviors.

Established in 2002, the FLCC Campus-Community Coalition supports FLCC students interacting and working with the community in positive ways and engaging in activities that do not include the abuse of drugs and alcohol or other negative behaviors. The organization consists of FLCC student leaders, faculty, and staff; law enforcement representatives; town supervisors; community leaders; landlords; medical and health professionals; and a representative from the New York State Division of Alcohol Beverage Control.

The strategies discussed in the presentation include the following:
     * Collaborating with faculty, area middle schools, and outside agencies to encourage students' involvement in and service to the community. Service-learning projects, such as programs that involve mentoring middle and high school students, have demonstrated evidence of increasing college students' protective factors and reducing risk factors associated with alcohol and drug use.

     * Establishing collaborative relationships with law enforcement agencies to provide alcohol server training and support for the Ontario County Sheriff "Cops in Shops" program. These programs provide training to employees of stores and bars to check consumer identification, refuse to serve intoxicated patrons, and support underage-purchase sting operations.
     * Implementing a multimedia campaign to inform students of area activities, correct misperceptions of student alcohol and drug use, communicate actual FLCC student behaviors, and provide information on how FLCC students have "safe adventures." Information on FLCC student behaviors is based on students' responses to a variety of campus, statewide, and national surveys.

The Coalition welcomes community involvement. For information on becoming a Coalition member, contact Stein at (585) 394-3500, ext. 7298.
