Midlakes Sports

Coaches are always stressing improving athletic skills, but they also stress improving academic skills. They do this because they are interested in seeing the young people they work with develop into well-rounded adults who are the "best they can be."
Parents play a huge role in all parts of this, and the coaches are very grateful for your efforts. One thing that reaps havoc on a potentially great season for any squad is academic ineligibility. Please make every effort to see to it that your child meets his responsibilities in the classroom because being responsible (following directions, meeting deadlines, etc.) in one part of life generally spreads to all parts. Point out to your athlete that being ineligible takes a part of the team away and is letting the rest of the team down.
More about camps. The girls' basketball camp at the Chiropractic College on July 17-21 is for girls ages 8-14. Coach John Wilbur is assistant director. Among the coaching staff are Eric Kuhn, a Midlakes graduate, former coach here and now at Lyons, and Colleen Sheridan, a Canandaigua graduate who is now coaching at Marcus Whitman. There also are two wrestling camps in the area. The Oklahoma Gold camp, which the varsity team members try to attend as a team, will be June 26-30 at SUNY Brockport. The All American wrestling camp will be held July 11-14 at Penfield High School. This one is a day camp from 9am- noon, with participants going home each afternoon and returning, consequently is less expensive. The wrestling boosters will help each wrestler with $50 toward camp. For more information, contact your athlete's wrestling coach or call the school for more information and entry forms.
The Midlakes wrestling program held its end-of-season awards dinner last Wednesday at Club 86 in Geneva. Coach Manns described the modified wrestlers as hard workers who were not discouraged and were absolutely giddy with excitement. He then called them up by weight groups, the way the matches are set up, to hand out the certificates..
Coach Tewksbury pointed out that, of the 6 tournaments they entered, the jv team had champions in at least one weight class in 5 of them. Individual trophies were handed out to: Trent Jones for the most takedowns (16), Trent Jones and Aaron Congdon tied for the most reversals (7), Bryant Rice for the most escapes (13), Nick Newland for the most near falls (4 & 5), Aaron Congdon and Nick Newland for a technical fall (1). Nick Millar took home 4 of them: most pins (13), fastest pin (14 seconds), most wins (13), and most points for the team (104). Not surprisingly he was the Most Valuable team member. Nick Newland was the Most Improved. Coach Tewksbury also pointed out where each of the boys could improve his game.
Coach VanGorden remarked about the bad luck his seniors met this year - Chad Clark was last year's MVP and missed this entire season with a knee injury suffered the first week of practice; Seth Smith, a sectional runner-up last year, was injured half way through the season so didn't get to sectionals; Jeremy Denisi at 160lbs. faced a field at sectionals that had 6 returning state qualifiers. We also had some weight classes where we just couldn't fit anyone that night and so spotted opponents to sometimes up to 24 points.
There were trophies for the individual record holders: most takedowns - Morgan Hoven (67), most reversals - Enan Congdon (16), most escapes - Jeremy Denisi (38), most near falls 2 - Morgan Hoven (11), most near falls 3 - Enan Congdon (22), most near falls 4 - Chris Stobie (1), most technical falls - Morgan Hoven (3), most pins - Enan Congdon (20), fastest pin - Jeremy Denisi (20 seconds), most wins - Morgan Hoven (29), and most team points - Morgan Hoven (160.5). Not surprisingly Morgan was the Most Valuable; Chris Teed with an 11-5 record in his second year, was named the Most Improved.
Coach VanGorden also wanted the crowd to realize how close we came to having sectional champs. Morgan lost the championship match, 9-8. Enan, down 6-0 early, lost the championship match, 6-3. Chris Teed lost in the championship match, 7-5. Chris Stobie took his opponent to OT before finishing 4th as a sophomore. Chris Stobie, Chris Teed, Adam Biesenbach, and Seth Smith were honorable mention, all league. Morgan Hoven and Enan Congdon were named to the first team, all league.
The real highlight of this evening is always the Captains' Awards - humorous little inside jokes handed out by the team captains, this year Adam Biesenbach and Enan Congdon. Trent Jones received the Homophobia Award. Rob Barber's was "I Forgot My Singlet." Nick Miller "seemed always sick." Steve Rathbone's mantra was "I should have done that." The "Shy Guy" was Tyler Turner.
He couldn't participate for half the season but was always there to give advice, etc. so Seth Smith was the "Assistant Assistant Coach." Bryant Rice's love of cocoa butter earned him the "Ashy Larry" award. Chris Stobie was noticed as the "Hold my bag while I kiss my girl" guy. Josh Moracco received the "fungus" award and is finally over all the skin infections he picked up from mats. Chris Teed takes One Hour Showers.
Jeremy Denisi apparently Loves to be Naked. Morgan Hoven was named "Big Rig" for the sound he makes while working out. Aaron Congdon received the "Pad" award. Nick Newland was Hard Headed. Dan Jones received the "fake-out" award. For his love of poker Gabe Gigliotti was named "the Gambler." Steve Kemp was given the "Pink Shirt" award.
Seth Smith, Adam Biesenbach and Enan Congdon took the opportunity to thank their parents and coaches for their confidence and inspiration. Enan mentioned his older brother, Phil, who worked with the modified team when Enan was on it, as being his major role model. Seth felt he had learned a great deal about life, along with wrestling -"work hard enough and you'll come out OK in the end." I'd say that's pretty good
advice.
For returning wrestlers the weight room will be open 2:30-4pm daily, and there will be an open gym "live wrestling" opportunity 7-8:30 starting in April (check out the bulletin boards for details). There are 2 Titan Wrestling Clubs in the area, where freestyle, Greco-Roman (Olympic) and high school style wrestling styles are taught. One is in Canandaigua, the other in Penfield, from 6-8:15, so you could wrestle twice a week all year. For the diehard fan there is always armdrag.com which covers Section V wrestling.
