George "Coach" Doherty
CLIFTON SPRINGS - George "Coach" Doherty, 86, of West Main St., passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Clifton Springs Hospital Extended Care.
Friends called Tuesday, March 29 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, March 30 at St. Felix Church in Clifton Springs. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Agnes Cemetery.
Friends may contribute to their favorite charity in George's memory.
George was born May 11, 1918, the son of Frank and Alma Doherty, and had lived in the area most of his life. He was a graduate of Purdue University and Northwestern University with a master's degree in physical education and health.
He was offered three Major League Baseball positions, including one with the Cincinnati Reds, but "Coach" was called to serve his country in the Air Corps, where he obtained the rank of captain.
Though he never went to the majors, George played ball beside several Hall of Famers such as Enos Slaughter and Walter "Hoot" Evers. Shortly after moving to Clifton Springs, George became athletic director at Clifton Springs High School and coached football, basketball, baseball, track, golf and volleyball, winning several league titles during his career.
George enjoyed sailing his Thistle sailboat on Canandaigua Lake and ice boating on several of the Finger Lakes. He was a founding member of the Clifton Springs Country Club and a past president of the Clifton Springs Rotary Club. The Coach will be sadly missed by all his loving friends and family.
George is survived by daughters, Joanne (Karl) Haynes of Newark and Gail (Bob) Bedette of Phelps; two sisters, Alma (Tom) McDermott of Honeoye Falls and Joyce (Tom) Boddy of Henrietta; a brother, Richard (Jean) Doherty of Irondequoit; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Marjorie.
Herman J. Mark
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Herman J. Mark, 94, of 11 E. Main St, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 20, 2005 at Clifton Springs Hospital.
In keeping with his wishes, there were no calling hours.
Friends were invited to attend a celebration of his life on Thursday, March 24 at the Spa Apartments Chapel in Clifton Springs.
Friends may contribute to their favorite charity in Herman's memory.
Herman was born Nov. 4, 1910, in Clifton Springs, the son of Bernhard and Lena Mark. He was a missionary for five years in Borneo in the 1950s. Herman was employed as a gym teacher and basketball coach for both Shortsville and Penfield school districts. He will be deeply missed by all his loving friends and family.
Herman is survived by his son, Charles Mark of Hawaii; a daughter, Kathleen Phillips of Oregon; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis Mark of Pennsylvania; and a nephew, Wallace Mark of Phelps.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline, in 1997; and three brothers, Isadore, Jacob and Henry.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs.
Rosalie Walters Rigney
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Rosalie Walters Rigney, 88, of The Spa Apartments, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the F.F. Thompson Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua.
In keeping with her wishes, there were no prior calling hours. Friends were invited to attend a celebration of her life on Monday, March 28 at the Spa Apartments Chapel in Clifton Springs. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Agnes Cemetery.
Friends may contribute to the Spa Apartments Activity Fund or to St. Felix Church in Rose's memory.
Rose was born June 7, 1916, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Harry and Mary VanKerkove, and had lived in the area most of her life. She and her husband, Bussy, owned and operated the Walters Locker Plant in Clifton Springs for many years.
Rose was very active in the community, as a Pink Lady at Clifton Springs Hospital, managing the lobby Shop for many years, volunteering at the local thrift store, Girls Scouts and many activities at the Spa Apartments. She also enjoyed golfing and gardening.
Rose will be sadly missed by all of her loving friends and family.
She is survived by her daughters, Joan (Ted) Case Dengelmaier of Big Flats and Leni Walters Richardson of Ouray, Colo.; a son, William F. (Linda) Walters of Clifton Springs; a brother-in-law, Donald Walters of Clifton Springs; a sister-in-law, Theresa Swartele of Phelps; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Bussy Walters; her second husband, John J. Rigney; and two sisters, Josephine Buck and Mildred Ryan.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs.
Alice C. Rolland
PORT GIBSON - Alice C. Rolland, 102, formerly of Port Gibson, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Geneva Living Center North.
Friends called Friday, March 25 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Funeral services were Saturday, March 26 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Port Gibson Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Contributions may be made to the Charles and Alice Rolland Education Fund, c/o William Rolland, 3215 Creek Road, Youngstown 14174.
Alice was born May 3, 1902, in Newark, the daughter of Philip and Emma Trautman and had lived in the area all of her life. She was a graduate of Palmyra High School in 1919, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a magna cum laude graduate of Syracuse University in 1923 with a bachelor of arts degree in education.
From 1923 to 1936, Alice taught in three elementary country schools. She was employed by schools in Homer, Hudson, Skaneateles and Phelps from 1936 to 1964. In 1981, Alice received the "Outstanding Farm Woman" award from the Ontario County Farm Bureau.
Alice was a member of the Grange, Park Presbyterian Church in Newark and the Senior Citizens groups in Port Gibson and Clifton Springs. Alice married Charles Rolland in 1932, living 69 happy years together until his death in 2001.
She is survived by her sons, Roy (Kay) Rolland of Geneva, Bill (Mary Ann) Rolland of Youngstown and Tom (Barbara) Rolland of Vermont; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
