Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

The jv tennis team had the honor of having the first home contest of the spring sports season. The very inexperienced team hosted Victor last Thursday afternoon, after things had turned windy and cool, with an occasional drop of rain. Things did not go well, and Victor won all 5 points. AJ DeSain at 1st singles, Cody Schmitt at 2nd singles, and Tyler Coon at 3rd singles all lost in straight sets as did the 2nd doubles team of Billy DeJonge and Kevan Donlon. The first doubles duo of Tim Piper and Mike Green won one set but lost the match. This team is scheduled to be home again on Wednesday, April 6, hosting Mynderse.
The varsity boys' lacrosse team took the field at 5pm on Thursday, 45 minutes after the tennis team. This is the first season that Midlakes has played varsity boys' lacrosse, and because of that it may be a long season - no one has varsity experience. The first game was a rough one against Mynderse and resulted in a 7-2 loss. Coach Doan is again working with this team and released the roster last week.
Clay Hemminger is the lone sophomore on a team that is mostly juniors. Ben Bengston, Josh Sauve, Wes Carlson, Brendan Hennessy, Chris Ledgerwood, Ryan McConnon, Ryan Forshay, Jeff Benedicks, Ricky Dawley, Nate Stevens, and Jon Briggs are the juniors. Seniors Mike Grover, Tom Swart, Jeremy Denisi, Kyle LaVare, and Dom Valerio round out the list.
The jv team is coached by Ethan Sleeman and consists of mostly freshmen: Shane Burkett, Jeff Clark, Dan Jones, Ben Mays, Jeff Meyn, Nick Newland, Matt Noble, Jared Schoonerman, Adam Sheppard, Dan Sinack, Jared Strub, James Tillman, Justin VanCamp, Brandon Wentworth, Andrew DeMarco, and Gun Rindflesh. There are only four sophomores: Aaron Congdon, Mike Hixson, Jonah Trammel, and Glenn Stevenson.
The varsity girls' lacrosse team took on Victor in their home opener last Friday, April 1. Victor hit the ground running and looked to be in mid-season form. We looked a bit rusty. The halftime score was 5-1. Their goalie had lightning quick reflexes and made a lot of saves, but we managed to sneak a few more past her in the second half. The final score was 7-5.
The jv game followed the varsity game, but I went home to fix dinner. (Ralph is quite handicapped this spring, having broken his leg in 3 places on St. Patrick's Day, so he isn't even putting things into the oven.) Coach Scalise gave me the following roster.
Sammi Latch is the goalie. Attackers include Samantha Clay-Reagan, Jenna Rowland, Courtney DeWind, Krista Baroody, Holli Rinaldo, and Katie Leitner. Holly Norsen, Sonia Lutzen, Michelle Marks, Caitlin McVeigh, Suzanne Mullard, and Liz Baker are defenders. Stacey DeCook, Kristina Pearson, Hannah Shedenhelm, Alex Sheppard, Heather Galens, and Stephanie Vavra are midfielders.
Probably by the time you read this the jv baseball team will have opened their season at home against Penn Yan. Coach Raulli released his roster last week. It is almost evenly divided between freshmen and sophomores. The sophs are Tom Goodman, Josh Moracco, Chris Galliher, Adam Norsen, Bryant Lead, Greg VanderBrook, Rob Barber, and Mike Benzer. Let's all hope Mike makes it through the season injury-free. Last year he was badly injured and laid up virtually all summer, then missed most of basketball when it was discovered he still had a problem that had gone undetected.
The freshmen on the jv team are Colin Hotchkiss, Josh DeBoover, Kyle Tillman, Kyle Turner, Matt Jensen, Eric Minns, and Kodey Clark.
The jv softball team will also play on Tuesday, April 5, but I do not have the rosters for any of the softball teams yet. The varsity baseball team's home opener is Thursday at 4:15. There is a jv boys' lacrosse game at 5 and a girls' varsity lacrosse
game at 6. The varsity baseball team will play at home on Thursday along with the varsity softball team and the track teams, too - another busy day. Friday's a slow day with only varsity boys' lacrosse, at 5pm. Monday, April 11 you can se the jv baseball and softball teams, and the track team is home again on Tuesday.
