FLCC STUDENT NAMED TO NYS ACADEMIC TEAM
|

Finger Lakes Community College student James Bryant, of Canandaigua, was recently selected as a member of the 2005 All-New York First Academic Team for the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Bryant received recognition at the Annual Phi Theta Kappa Awards Luncheon in Albany.
Bryant's achievement resulted from his nomination for the 2005 All-USA Community and Junior College Academic Team, sponsored by USA TODAY, the American Association of Community Colleges, and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. At both the national and state levels, successful candidates demonstrated academic excellence, intellectual rigor in their course of study, academic growth, and evidence that they used their education to better themselves, their schools, and their communities.
"The entire FLCC community is pleased that James has been recognized for his leadership, commitment, and contributions," said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, FLCC president. "We're proud to have him as a student at the College."
The first FLCC student to be named to the New York First Team since the inception of the state-level honor, Bryant has been an active member of the FLCC community academically and in co-curricular activities. Currently a member of Phi Theta Kappa maintaining a 3.6 grade point average, he will graduate in May with an associate in arts degree in liberal arts and sciences.
Bryant has made government an integral part of his career at FLCC. He has been a Student Senator since September 2003. As part of his duties in this position, he currently serves as the student representative to the College's governance system, including College Council and Academic Senate. Since May 2004, Bryant has served as the Student Trustee to the FLCC Board of Trustees. In this role, he has full voting privileges on the Board and acts as a liaison between the Board and the Student Corporation, the student governing body.
In addition to his roles in College government, Bryant has demonstrated a political commitment of another kind through his involvement in FLEA, the Finger Lake Environmental Action club. He served as president for the 2003 - 04 academic year and has since continued his involvement through meetings and activities. During his presidency, Bryant and the other members of FLEA created a weekly fundraising event, an "open-mike/coffeehouse" night open to the public, to benefit the preservation of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, a campaign about which they learned through the work of conservation writer and campus visitor Anne LaBastille. Bryant's coursework also included a focus on conservation, including a trip to Costa Rica to study the rain forests as part of a travel/ecology class.
Bryant has reached out to his many communities in other ways as well. For the past two years, he has worked with students, faculty, and community members to craft and maintain trails on land recently donated to the community in a nearby town. He spearheaded a student effort in fall 2003 to help prevent the closing of Canandaigua's VA hospital. In 2004, Bryant and others organized a Rock the Vote concert at the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center to increase voter registration and awareness, particularly among young people. The event included locally and nationally recognized artists. Throughout his time at FLCC, Bryant has worked outside the College to help finance his education.
Upon graduation, Bryant plans to transfer to SUNY Geneseo to pursue a bachelor's degree in U.S. history and political science. Ultimately he plans to earn a doctoral degree and become a professor of U.S. history.
The FLCC Alpha Epsilon Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was chartered in 1981. Scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship are the hallmarks of the organization. To qualify for membership, students must have accumulated 15 or more credit hours and have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Phi Theta Kappa serves the community through programs such as the Holiday Angel Tree Project, the Adopt-A-Highway program, and Relay for Life. For 2004 - 06, the organization's international service program is "Conquering Cancer: Continuing the Fight," and its academic programs focus on the Honors Study Topic "Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are."
