PHIL LOSSIFER

As our hysterized Media shouts from rooftops 'bout the Schiavo an' Jackson stories other problems're bein' ignored. Religious Right demands Congress call members back t'vote on RR problems, but when national security or minimum wage bills are bein' debated, they procrastinate! Senate's Schiavo vote was approved by a voice vote with only three, repeat three Senators present! Voice votes show all are present, when they're in Lower Slobbovia, south of Dogpatch.
David Gergen's "US News" editorial (4/4) was 'bout our educational system. Frankly, he misses this point. It's become a featherbeddin' system of high salaried administrators an' college professors who hate our system of govmint, despite all the benefits they've received. The great search is tenure! It enables them to reside in institutions, periodically emergin' for great pronouncements or a lower tax base, respectfully! Many professors paper's data may be based upon foreign-born graduate students' lab work! School teachers with built-in student prejudices favorin' elitist parents or sport jocks whose sports ability attitude gives them "considerations" in the system. Hard, yes, truth, yes!
Our educational system's troubles start with parents whom don't equate paternity with responsibility t' raise 'em. They expect, no demand, school systems t' educate their offspring, accept their temper tantrums an' dumb-down courses to insure passage inta the next grade. Our political establishments from school boards upward cut budgets for voter favor: reduce taxes while demandin' top performance on test scores. School boards with cooperation of state educational departments abandon old schools as insufficient, buildin' new facilities where athletic facilities rival professional sports stadiums.
Gergen noted two-thirds of our students are left behind, mostly low income an' minority students. Since it's m' opine yer either gonna educate kids, fight 'em, fill jails or s'port 'em on welfare. Don't think kids have this down pat, git t' be eighteen, apply t' social services, set on their duff or work under the table. Our military is filled with low income kids who enlisted fer an education. Once promised, often not delivered because, a'gin, budget cuts! Buchanan's book stated seventy-six percent of children t'day are born out of wedlock, an' guess who ends up s'portin' 'em? We do, an' polyticians' votes depend upon Medicaid programs!
Bill Gates states "America's high schools are obsolete." Wrong, Mr. Gates, schools ain't obsolete, it's frills an' dumb-down courses the problem, parents are part of it! Teachers cain't teach in a riot, but parental pressures pertect lil' Alphonse from the reality of life. Woe t' any teacher admonishin' pupils!!
Read Gergen's warnin' article. Outsourcin' moves good payin' jobs away, with CEO acceptance. Service jobs fer college grads? What goes 'round comes 'round. Will it change? Parents are raisin' spoilt brats, employers winkin' at illegals. System needs changin' an' discipline from parents an' schools is the only way t' start. Take yer choice. It might be too late. Never 'nuff sed!
