CASE CLOSED!
Clifton Springs Chief, Scott Upchurch with Ontario County District Attorney, Mike Tantillo at the News Conference on Monday, April 4, 2005.
A special Thanks to Bob Ellis, who took this photo and allowed us to use it here.

Prior to our most recent homicide (three and a half years ago) of Mike Jewel, Clifton Springs had not had a murder case since February of 1977.
Since the news was released at a press conference on April 4th, and we had already gone to press for that week, it is not too difficult to realize that we weren't going to "soop" anyone wih the latest. I'm sure that most have heard the facts (especally if you watch R News and see it repeat many times per day) over and over. Having said that, we'd like to concentrate on our local police department and the credit they deserve.
Scott Upchurch was hired as a part time police officer 1n 1994 and went full time in 1997. In 2000 he was promoted to chief when Steve LeRoy retired. We can only imagine how a homicide so soon after becoming chief, must have impacted Scott. Actually we can "only imagine" many of the details of this whole case. In some cases it is an effort to keep everyone from knowing some of the "tricks of the trade". Sometimes it's political (make sure the big boys get the credit). We're not going write a lot on the system or how it works.
I'm sure this homicide has been a burden on the Chief's life for these past three and a half. He has tried to remain quietly in the bakground for these past several weeks, but he seems to be a little more at ease lately. As a matter of fact, so does the whole village.
I believe we all owe our gratitude to The Clifton Springs Police De-partment , not only for this "big" case but for the everyday things that we take for granted. I, for one am very comfortable with the quality of our police protection. This is one of the times that it is seems very appropriate to say thanks to these men who put them-selves in harms way to protect us.
THANKS to you, Scott and to Officer Steve Eagley. We're proud of you!!!!

Clifton Springs "Top Cop", Scott Upchurch
