FINGER LAKES VISITING NURSE SERVICE SALUTES OUR VOLUNTEERS
|
Across the United States, April is celebrated as Volunteer Month and Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Service (FLVNS) salutes our incredible pool of talented volunteers.
We have approximately 230 FLVNS volunteers. They volunteer anywhere from 1 day of their time to 11 years of dedicated service. They range in age from early teens to late 80's. Some are retired and some are still working. All are incredibly gifted, generous and compassionate beyond compare. They give of their time, money and talents. Many volunteers are willing to perform their duties at a moment's notice, morning, noon and night - 365 days a year. Their volunteer work takes them into people's homes, hospitals, nursing homes, our Geneva office and Hospeace House. If you ask them why they do this - you'll most likely hear "because I'm needed and can help", "I want to give back to others", or "I would want someone there for me."
In the last 12 years Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Service's Volunteer Department has significantly grown from 4000 volunteer hours annually to over 20,000+ volunteer service hours per year. The growth directly relates to the volunteers and their dedication to providing meaningful services for those in need. It can also be attributed to a Volunteer Department staff, Candy Calabrese and Jane Wing, who continually recruit, train and place volunteers in roles that best meet their interests and goals.
The scope and breadth of duties varies drastically among volunteer assignments.
* Hospice Volunteers provide companionship, hands-on care, running errands and providing support to the patients' families. They play a critical role on the Hospice Team and the Hospice Department could not function without this support.
* Office volunteers perform a lot of the "back office" duties such as filing, sorting, assembling nursing folders and copying, making it possible to put more resources back into direct patient care.
* Companion Volunteers check up on their matches via the telephone and friendly visits. They help keep loneliness and isolation at bay. The individualized attention aids in the healing process.
* SOS volunteers help transport people to medical appointments and run errands for people without transportation or who are homebound.
* Share a Meal volunteers visit their match during a meal time hour.
* Hospital Ambassadors visit patients who have gone from our nursing service into the hospital. They check to make sure they have what they need to make their hospital stay more comfortable and that things at home are taken care of. There is nothing more comforting than knowing that your pet is being taken care of or that your plants are being watered.
What makes our volunteer department great? Great people. Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Service is blessed with some of the best volunteers in the a 4-county radius. If you see one of our volunteers tell them how great they are!
