Midlakes Sports

Last week's weather cooperated beautifully (OK - it was a little cold early in the week) and might be some sort of a record with spring sports not being rained on for an entire week. I was at the jv baseball game with Mynderse on Monday and it was very cold, but sunny.
Midlakes scored 3 times in the bottom of the first but gave up 3 in the top of the 2nd, thanks to 3 errors in the field. The inning ended with a nice throw from first baseman Mike Benzer to catcher Eric Minns to put out the runner trying to score from third. We scored in the bottom of the 2nd and again in the bottom of the 4th on passed balls, giving us a 5-3 lead.
With Matt Jensen pitching and hitting a single, Adam Norsen's 2 singles, and Mike Benzer picking up 2 RBIs with 1 single we were feeling pretty good until suddenly the Blue Devils picked up 2 runs in the top of the 7th and forced extra innings. Both teams played 4 flawless innings in the cold until Mynderse scored the winning run in the top of the 11th. Matt Jensen with 11 strikeouts was nonetheless the hard luck losing pitcher.
The team bounced back to beat Marcus Whitman on Tuesday, April 12. Kyle Tillman pitched the complete game, striking out 6 and picking up the win. He got a lot of offensive help - Tom Goodman had 5 hits; Adam Norsen had 4 hits; Chris Galliher, Matt Jensen, Kodey Clark, Colin Hotchkiss, Josh DeBoover, Eric Minns, Mike Benzer, Josh Moracco, and Kyle each had 2 hits; and Greg VanderBrook and Rob Barber each added 1 hit. It was truly a team effort.
That day I was enjoying the track meet. It's often hard to determine who won the races because some of them have two heats and unless you are at the finish line and hear the times you can only see the orders of finish. The Midlakes teams both won fairly easily, and some things I could tell.
Midlakes swept the 400 hurdles; a Waterloo hurdler led for part of the way but two Midlakes runners passed him on the final turn and Aaron Dorman passed him on the final straightaway for the sweep. In the 4x100 relay Sarah Kumkey anchored the first team and won going away. In the boys race Chad Ingerick anchored the Midlakes winning team; the other Midlakes team fumbled the 2nd pass and was disqualified.
In the girls' 1600 Marissa Gray and the Waterloo lead runner drafted off each other and took turns leading but Marissa was passed in the final straightaway to come in 2nd. It was the same result in the 800. The Midlakes boys jumped out to lead in the first lap and continued in 1,2,3 order. Nate Parsons pulled further into the lead with each lap, and Kyle Brown finished 2nd. I think it was Travis Buttaccio who won the 100 yard dash and the 400m where Chad Ingerick came in 2nd. In the boys' 200 Travis also finished 1st, followed by Ryan Nicoletta. In the boys' 800 Kyle Brown was running 3rd but decided to take over early in the back stretch of the final lap and won easily.
The boys' roster, like the girls' which was in last week's column, is a combination of "old-timers" and newcomers. The lone 8th grader is runner Aaron Hoven. Ninth graders are Mike Beck, Matt Gage, Matt Haintz, Trenton Jones, Steve Rathbone, and Nick Soler. Josh Turner, Chris Stobie, Adam Scheele, Jamison Reed, Jimmy Phamisith, Cullen Johnston, Bill Hanvey, Mike Gage, Mike Case, and Kyle Brown are the team's sophomores. There are only 4 juniors: Chris Teed, Riley O'Neil, Morgan Hoven, and Aaron Dorman. There are a dozen seniors: Joe Petzoldt, Nate Parsons, Jacob Olsen, Ryan Nicoletta, Chris Mowery, Bill Lathrop, Zach Lambert, Chad Ingerick, Tony Iannopollo, Andrew Gaines, Josh Carnright, and Travis Buttaccio. Some of these boys are new to the track team; too bad they have only this spring to make a mark.
Thursday the varsity boys' lacrosse team hosted Penn Yan, and they brought their state championship form. They scored twice in the first minute and again about 10 seconds after the next face-off. Penn Yan has a long history of lacrosse dominance, and they were determined that a program new to the varsity level would be sufficiently chastened. Our defense was porous, to say the least, and though goalie Brendan Hennessey made several saves they sometimes were wasted when his toss was not caught and resulted in another turnover. The score was 10-0 after one period. Our defense seemed to tighten up in the second period, and they perhaps backed off; they did not continue to score at the same torrid pace. Midlakes had two shots on goal in the second period and 2 more in the third. Nate Stevens was knocked down and out of the game as the 3rd period ended and spent the rest of the game on the bench with an ice bag to the side of his face. We got more aggressive on defense, and our passing improved as time went on. In the 4th period we managed 2 more shots on goal but never put one in; the final score was 19-0. Jeremy Denisi limped off near the end of the game and was seen with ice on his ankle.
The jv tennis team won their second match of the season last Wednesday by a 3-2 score over Wayne. AJ DeSain and Cody Schmitt won at 1st and 2nd singles respectively. Tim Piper and Mike Green at 1st doubles won in three sets.
The jv baseball team traveled to McQuaid last Thursday and lost, 6-3. Colin Hotchkiss pitched a complete game, allowing 6 hits and striking out 5. He also helped himself with an RBI single. Kyle Tillman hit a single and a double, Chris Galliher and Greg VanderBrook also contributed singles.
This week, with school children enjoying the spring break, there is not a lot going on. The girls have been at a softball tournament in the Utica area. The jv boys' baseball team had a game scheduled for 11am on Tuesday, and the varsity team hosts a tournament on Thursday and Friday, April 21-22.
The games begin at 9am on Thursday with North Rose-Wolcott playing Pal-Mac on one field and Mynderse playing Waterloo on field two. Midlakes takes the field at noon on field #1 against Dundee, while Bishop Kearney will take on Romulus on field #2. The third games of the day are scheduled for 3pm, and the match ups will be determined by the outcome of the earlier games. The games begin all over again at 9am on Friday with the match ups again being determined by the outcomes of Thursday's games.
