LETTER TO THE EDITOR
|
The Phelps Town Board has approved the purchase of the Mr. Video building on Route 88 as the new location for the Town Courthouse with an estimated cost of $300,000 plus, for the purchase and renovation of the building and parking lot.
The Town Board wisely rejected the old BOCES wing of the Banta Street building as it was located between the playground and the indoor recreation area.
I wonder if the council members or many of the taxpayers realize that the far north end of the building, which is accessible from the Banta Street side and remote from the recreation area, could be had for little or no cost to the town. Renovations would be very little consisting mainly of a separate side entrance and parking area. There would also be room for the Village Police Department and an area for the County Sheriff right next to the court area.
As for a meeting room the building already has a large area available at any time for no charge.
No one should disagree that we need a new place to hold court but we do not need a Courthouse.
Spending thousands of dollars to purchase and renovate a building and taking it off the tax roll is wasting taxpayers' money that could be better spent upgrading town barns or other items that benefit the taxpayers and not the ones who have violated the laws.
I urge all taxpayers to contact Supervisor Orlando and the council members on how you would like your tax dollars spent.
A Concerned Taxpayer
