FLCC NAMES THREE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 19, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College recently selected three graduates to receive the 2005 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Each award recognizes the accomplishments and service of FLCC alumni to their professions, communities, and the College. The recipients include Donald Rivers '73 of Los Angeles; Kevin Flynn '79 of Fairport; and Jeffery Kehrer '83 of Pasadena, Md.
Rivers is a lawyer in Los Angeles, specializing in the representation of business. In his career, he has represented clients in a broad range of industries including manufacturing, real estate, commercial contracting, and international trade. His work has taken him to Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, and Central America. In his current practice, he provides counsel to companies undergoing significant legal affairs demands and aids in the resurrection of companies in distress. He is also chief executive officer of Assembly Line Studios, a film production company that produces and distributes films for the theatrical and home entertainment markets.
Additionally, Rivers has served in a variety of civic and philanthropic organizations. In 1993 he founded the Opera Orchestra of Los Angeles, serving as its general director. Rivers has been a member of the California Legislature's Blue Ribbon Commission on Small Business, the Los Angeles County Citizen's Advisory Council, and the Los Angeles County Courthouse Commission. He has served as Counsel to the National Aids Quilt Exposition and has been a member of the board, commissioner, and team manager of the Cheviot Hills Youth Baseball League. Rivers and his wife, Geri, have five children.
Rivers earned a bachelor's degree from SUNY Buffalo and a law degree from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law. Both Rivers and his brother, Ric Rivers, a physician residing in Baltimore, received associate's degrees from FLCC. To honor the College and the role it played in their personal and professional lives, they established the Rivers Family Leadership Award in 2000. The award is a full-tuition scholarship for second-year students who demonstrate leadership and make meaningful contributions to the College.
Flynn is a partner in the marketing communications firm Martino Flynn, LLC, in Pittsford. The firm has received numerous awards for creative excellence and public relations. Flynn's duties include developing creative strategy, servicing accounts, and supervising the media and the new business functions of the agency.
Flynn is also an accomplished mountain climber. A two-time "Adirondack 46er" (someone who has climbed all 46 peaks 4,000 feet or higher), his vision is to climb the "Seven Summits," or the tallest peak on each continent around the world. To date, he has scaled Mt. Everest in Asia, Mt. McKinley in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in South America and Elbrus in Europe. He expects to complete Antarctica and Australia by 2006. Flynn has produced two videos on Mt. McKinley and Mt. Kilimanjaro and has given numerous presentations about his mountaineering adventures. Currently, Flynn is writing a book with the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle outdoor writer, Gary Fallesen, entitled "Mount Everest: Confessions of an Amateur Peak Bagger." The book is expected to be published in the fall of 2005. He also enjoys playing golf and skiing.
In addition, Flynn is a single-engine private pilot who owns a Cirrus SR22 airplane. He learned to fly in order to meet one of his clients in Pittsburgh, and now flies to meet with prospective clients throughout the Northern United States. Flynn also volunteers as an Angel Pilot, flying non-critically ill patients and family members to various destinations for medical treatment or visitation.
Serving on the board of directors for the Center for Environmental Information (CEI) since 1999, Flynn has helped raise funding for CEI by donating the proceeds from his Kilimanjaro video. He is also involved in several golf charity tournaments.
In 1979 Flynn graduated from FLCC with honors, and transferred to Cornell University where he earned a bachelor's degree in environmental education. Following a year of internship at his family's advertising business, Flynn returned to Cornell and earned a master's degree in communications.
Kehrer has been a member of the Secret Service since 1989, attached to the White House Branch. In 1992 he was selected for the Emergency Response Team Basic Training, which is a team that responds to all types of situations in the White House. In 1995 he completed the Counter Sniper (C/S) training class. The C/S unit is recognized around the world as one of the elite units in the law enforcement community for training and long-range shooting. The C/S team travels around the country and the world protecting the President and Vice President of the United States. In 2001, Kehrer was appointed to the Motorcade Support Unit, which escorts the President and Vice President around the Washington, D.C. area.
Kehrer has received numerous Appraisal/Noteworthy Performance awards, a Letter of Commendation for his work on the 1993 Presidential Inauguration, and a Letter of Commendation for his role in the redirection of an aircraft out of prohibited airspace around the White House.
Kehrer is a husband and father of two and spends most of his free time with his family. For the past three years he has coached his son's youth baseball and basketball teams.
Kehrer received an associate's degree in criminal justice from FLCC and continued his education at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He played baseball at John Jay and was named tri-captain his senior year. He was selected for the New York State Division III All-Star team and was named Division III All-American. He graduated cum laude from John Jay with a bachelor of science degree in 1985.
The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes achievement in one or more of the following areas: professional achievement as evidenced by performance with distinction in the field; community service as evidenced by serving with distinction in civic, service, or philanthropic organizations; service to FLCC as demonstrated by outstanding loyalty and service over a period of several years.
