The jv tennis team has been having a rough season, not unexpected with a group of inexperienced players that is exactly the correct number of players. Back on April 26 they lost to HAC. Both doubles teams and 1st and 2nd singles lost, 3rd singles was a forfeit. A full squad didn't help the next day (4/27) against Canandaigua - they still lost, 0-5. On Friday of that week in Bloomfield the score was 1-4. All the singles players lost along with 2nd doubles, but Al Fratto and Mike Green at 1st doubles won, 6-2, 6-4.
On Monday, May 2 in Newark the score was again 1-4 but for a different reason. The singles players all lost, but this time the 1st doubles team lost and the 2nd doubles team, of Billy DeJonge and Joe McGrath won, 6-1, 7-6. Wednesday, May 4, was a different outcome. We defeated North Rose, 4-1. AJ DeSain at 1st singles, Joe McGrath at 3rd singles, and the 1st doubles team of Mike Green and Al Fratto all won, plus North Rose forfeited at 2nd doubles. The team was scheduled to travel to North Rose on Tuesday, May 10, for a rematch.
Meanwhile, the jv baseball team headed to spring break with a 10-5 win over Pal-Mac on April 15. Bryant Lead was the winning pitcher with 4 good innings before being relieved by Matt Jensen to start the 5th. The pitchers got the run support from Mike Benzer (2 singles, 1 double), Matt Jensen ( 1 single, I double), Eric Minns (1 single, 1 double), Chris Galliher (1 single), Adam Norsen (1 double), and Tyler Turner (1 single).
During the break they ran into the buzz saw of McQuaid for an 18-4 loss, as reported previously.
They came back after vacation to face and defeat Newark. From an early 5-0 hole, the Eagles fought back to take a 6-5 lead after 6 innings only to see Newark score twice in their last at bat. We rallied again for 2 runs of our own in the bottom of the 7th to win, 8-7. Bryant Lead was the winning pitcher, going the distance and striking out 6. The offense came from the bats of Chris Galliher (2 hits, including the game winning RBI), Kyle Tillman (2RBIs), Mike Benzer, Eric Minns, Greg VanderBrook, and Tyler Turner.
On April 29 Midlakes faced Canandaigua in a slugfest. The teams combined for 23 hits, resulting in 22 runs. Unfortunately the Eagles came out on the short end, losing 11-10.Catcher Eric Minns threw out one runner trying to steal and also helped keep the Eagles within reach with a great tag at home on a good play by shortstop Chris Galliher. Eric also helped with his bat, turning in 2 hits with an RBI. Kyle Tillman (1 single, 1 double, 2RBIs), Mike Benzer (1 single, 1 triple, RBI), Greg VanderBrook (1 single, 1 HR, 3 RBIs), Matt Jensen (1 single), Chris Galliher (1 single), and Tom Goodman (1 single) also had hits for Midlakes.
Last Wednesday the game against Victor was a close one (5-3) until Midlakes committed 4 errors in the 6th, effectively giving the win to Victor. Matt Jensen was the tough luck loser who pitched well; he also had one of the four Midlakes hits. Mike Benzer, Adam Norsen and Tom Goodman had the other hits.
The sloppy play continued into the next game, against visiting Honeoye Falls-Lima. They had a 10-0 lead before we woke up, settled down and played flawless ball over the final 5 innings, outscoring HFL 4-0. Bryant Lead led the offense with 2 hits and an RBI. Greg VanderBrook, Matt Jensen, Josh Moracco and Adam Norsen also had hits.
The modified girls began their softball season on April 26 at Wayne with a 5-3 loss. Pitcher Rachel Bloomer worked 5 innings, picking up 10 Ks while giving up 3 walks and allowing 5 hits. She also went 2 for 3 at the bat, including a double. Brogan Hinckley and Jessica Foulkrod had RBIs. Emily Wright and Ashley Lane were defensive standouts.
The modified boys gave Wayne a work over, emerging with a 13-2 win. Jake Clyde was the winning pitcher: in 5 innings he gave up only 1 hit, struck out 13 and walked one. At the plate Travis Goodman had 2 hits, including a double. Erin Kelly went 2 for 2 with a double. Harley Morales reached base 3 times and scored twice. Matt DeHond hit a double.
The varsity baseball team hosted HFL the same day the jv team did. The games were not similar but the result was. Mark DeCook was on the mound for us, Chris Kauder was catching. We scored in the bottom of the 1st to take a 2-0 lead, but Mark was struggling and the 2nd inning was a disaster. HFL scored 7 times, helped by a hit batter, a walk, an error, and a wild pitch, then picked up 2 more in the 3rd. Neil Scheible came on in relief in the 5th and shut them down. We kept chipping away, but the final score was 9-8.
The modified girls' lacrosse team hosted Canandaigua on May 5. Allison Strub was in goal and we got off to a great start. Jen Stoffel and Gina Phamisith both scored in the first period. Canandaigua missed on a penalty shot, but with their passing ability it was just a matter of time; they scored before the first period ended and twice again early in the second. They also scored on a penalty shot that moved the goalie out of goal to watch (I'd never seen that before). Devan Lapresi and Caity Kumkey scored for Midlakes in that period, but Canandaigua scored four more times for an 8-4 halftime lead
Allison Millerd scored for us in the 3rd period, and Devan scored again in the 4th but Canandaigua's passing ability made things very tough for our defense and was the reason for the 12-6 loss.
There's a lot going on this week at Midlakes except on Friday when all the games are away. Most things start at 4:15, with varsity and jv boys' lacrosse beginning at 5pm. Many spectators feel it is easier to reach the baseball and softball diamonds if you park at the elementary school and walk over from there. From there as from the middle school parking lot there is a blacktop path.
