FLCC HOSTS 37TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES MAY 22
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 3, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College will host its Thirty-Seventh Annual Commencement Ceremonies Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center on the FLCC Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. A reception will follow the ceremonies. Admission is free, and friends and family members are encouraged to attend.
More than 800 students will graduate from FLCC this May. Ranging from natural resources conservation to music recording technology, the College offers more than 40 academic degree and certificate programs to prepare graduates for careers or transfer to four-year institutions.
Slightly more than half of this year's graduating class will earn associate in arts and/or associate in science degrees, preparing them for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, while others will graduate with associate in applied science degrees and certificates in preparation for careers.
Kevin Flynn '79, of Fairport, will deliver the keynote address. Flynn is a partner in the marketing communications firm Martino Flynn, LLC, in Pittsford. The firm has received numerous awards for creative excellence and public relations. Flynn's responsibilities include developing creative strategy, servicing accounts, and supervising the media and the new business functions of the agency.
Flynn is also an accomplished mountain climber. A two-time "Adirondack 46er" (someone who has climbed all 46 peaks 4,000 feet or higher), his vision is to climb the "Seven Summits," or the tallest peak on each continent around the world. To date, he has scaled Mount Everest in Asia, Mount McKinley in North America, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Aconcagua in South America, and Mount Elbrus in Europe. He expects to complete Antarctica and Australia by 2006.
Flynn has produced two videos on McKinley and Kilimanjaro and has given numerous presentations about his mountaineering adventures. Currently, he is writing a book with Gary Fallesen, the Rochester "Democrat and Chronicle" outdoor writer, entitled "Mount Everest: Confessions of an Amateur Peak Bagger." The book is expected to be published in the fall of 2005. Flynn also enjoys playing golf and skiing. This month Flynn will be recognized as co-winner of the Press Radio Club's Local Amateur Athlete of the Year Award.
In addition, Flynn is a single-engine private pilot who owns a Cirrus SR22 airplane. He learned to fly in order to meet one of his clients in Pittsburgh and now flies to meet with prospective clients throughout the northern United States. Flynn also volunteers as an Angel Pilot, flying non-critically ill patients and family members to various destinations for medical treatment or visitation.
Serving on the board of directors for the Center for Environmental Information (CEI) since 1999, Flynn has helped raise funding for CEI by donating the proceeds from his Kilimanjaro video. He is also involved in several charity golf tournaments.
After graduating with honors from FLCC in 1979, Flynn transferred to Cornell University where he earned a bachelor's degree in environmental education. Following a year of internship at his family's advertising business, Flynn returned to Cornell and earned a master's degree in communications. Recently Flynn was selected to receive a 2005 FLCC Distinguished Alumni Award.
The Nursing Advancement Ceremony, a special commencement ceremony for nursing students, will take place May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center. Admission to the Nursing Advancement Ceremony is free and open to friends and family members of FLCC students who are graduating from the College's nursing program.
