GRANGER HOMESTEAD AND CARRIAGE MUSEUM OPENING DELAYED TO MAY 31st

This summer's visitors will be the first to enjoy the newly restored Dining Room and Stair Hall, refurbished with new period carpeting. Installation of the new period carpeting that has been loomed especially for the Homestead in England has postponed the previously announced season opening by a week.

Tuesday, May 31st marks the season opening for the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum, 295 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY. Visitors will enjoy a number of local historic sights including:

"      Narrated guided tours, viewing the period rooms and furnishings in the 1816 mansion, including many original Granger pieces, portraits of the Granger family and stories about four generations of Granger family members who have lived in the elegant house.
"      A tour of the carriage museum featuring nearly 80 horse-drawn and hand-drawn antique vehicles and farm implements.
"      Horse-drawn tours of Canandaigua's historic neighborhoods and sites are available by reservation on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The Homestead was built by Gideon Granger, who was Postmaster General under Presidents Jefferson and Madison from 1800 to 1813, and is considered one of the finest examples of Federal style architecture in Western New York.

The Carriage Museum is offering a new display for the 2005 season - "A Sunday Picnic". Vehicles that would have been popular for a Sunday Drive with families from all walks of life will be on display, fitted out with Victorian picnic baskets. The farm equipment display will focus on the four seasons of farming, including tools and vehicles that farmers would have used for ice harvesting and other winter activities.

Guided tours are available 1pm - 4pm and are offered on the hour, Tuesday through Friday. During June, July and August the schedule is expanded to include Saturday and Sunday. The gift shop is open during all regular hours. Visitors can expect that a complete tour of both the mansion and the carriage museum will take approximately two hours.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $1 for students K-12. Preschoolers are free. No reservations are required. Group tours and special arrangements are available for parties, weddings, teas, meetings and motor coach groups by advance reservation.
