Farmington (Phelps) Women's Softball League
Week # 1
|
Those of us who follow Midlakes sports paused last week to mourn the passing of a part of our circle, Ken Maslyn. Countless hours he spent on the bleachers watching, enjoying, discussing talent and strategy, and always he took great pride in the efforts and accomplishments of his grandchildren. The previous week I sat with him at the varsity baseball game, a frustrating game that we lost, but we both took note of the sometimes outstanding defense, and he was as proud of Tim Jopson's accomplishments as he was of those of his blood grandsons, Ryan Forshay and Zach Maslyn (who weren't playing that day). Before their time, it was Kristin Bump's games he watched with pride, but he enjoyed watching all the athletes do their best, relatives or not. We'll all miss his physical presence at the games, but I'm sure he'll be there in spirit.
The varsity softball team hosted Penn Yan on May 9, and the concession stand
was open (big dill pickles are a new item); also the scoreboard was operating. Liz Donk was on the mound, Krystal Lathrop was catching. Things looked good. No PY player got on base in the first, and we had two hits in our half, a single by Stephanie Groff and a double by Liz, and an RBI sacrifice for Laura Hopkins.
No scoring in the 2nd for either team, but PY scored when a walked batter came around on an error in the 3rd. Their pitcher had a great fastball and a changeup that usually finished off the hitter, and we went out 1-2-3 in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings while they scored again on the 4th.
The fifth inning was a disaster. Their hitters got really lucky with placement of hits that were catchable if you were in the right spot. Add in an error and they picked up 5 runs. "This is why my hair is grayer," quipped Coach Husk. "We play good ball, then all of a sudden things happen that we should have learned to prevent years ago." We did score in the bottom of the 5th, on an RBI triple by Angela Antennucci, but that was the end of our scoring. In the 6th inning Ashley Hall took over the pitching, exchanging places with Liz who went to 1st. We did execute a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play to shut them down in the 7th.
The next day the modified softball team, with a record of 0-4, hosted Mynderse.
Rachel Bloomer was pitching and faced only 10 batters through the first three innings, striking out 6 and allowing only one walk. Meanwhile catcher Emily Wright, who reached base on a dropped third strike, came around to score on a wild pitch as did Aliza DeWilde, who had walked.
Mynderse did score once in the 4th inning when Rachel gave up 2 hits along with 2 more Ks, but we scored 3 in our half. Sam Hemminger walked, then scored on a double by Rachel. Rachel scored on another wild pitch; and Ariel Smith, who reached base on an error, scored on a base hit by Bethany Notebaert. Mynderse did score again in the top of the 5th, but it was not enough to deprive the team of their first victory, 5-2.
The jv tennis team had their rematch with North Rose cancelled last week because North Rose didn't have enough players. We'd beaten them the week before, and we've often played without enough players - wonder what their problem was. The team hosted Pal-Mac on Friday and lost, 3-2. The singles players all lost, but the doubles teams of Mike Green and Al Fratto at 1st and Billy DeJonge and Kevin Donlon at 2nd won.
The varsity tennis team has had a looong, 2-10 season, so Coach Hicks holds onto small victories such as the win of 2nd doubles team RC Weston and Dan Cristofaro in the 3-2 loss to Geneva. The other point was picked up by a forfeit to Andrew Flye at 3rd singles.
The jv baseball team has played its last game, and three of them in the last week have been home games, but I was not able to see any of them due to scheduling (theirs and mine). However, Coach Raulli has been very good at keeping me informed.
The May 5 game with Marcus Whitman was well played and close for a while, until we broke it open with a bunch of hits, giving pitcher Kyle Tillman the win. He provided 4 hits, so did Matt Jensen. Adam Norsen had 3 hits; Chris Galliher, Greg VanderBrook and Tyler Turner each had 2; Eric Minns, Josh DeBoover, Tom Goodman, Rob Barber and Colin Hotchkiss each had one hit.
The next day Geneva beat up on us with a bunch of hits, and while we were not hitless, the 2 hits from Eric plus a double by Josh and singles by Matt Jensen and Greg were not enough to overcome.
Waterloo was here last Wednesday for the final home game of the season. Matt Jensen pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and giving up no walks. He managed, with great defensive help from his team, to survive a bases loaded, no outs situation and win, 7-2. Matt also hit a single and a triple; Chris Galliher had 2 singles; Greg VanderBrook added a double and a triple; Mike Benzer, Bryant Lead and Tom Goodman all added singles Wendys

Curves 9
Halfway Haus went all the way in the first night of games for the Farmington (Phelps) Women's Softball League. Wendy Newfrock lead the way with a double and triple. Karen Lucas wasn't far behind with a home run and a single, while Stacey Steele added a triple and two singles. For Curves: Sue Kalians, Donna Deeds, and Samantha Cardin all went 4/4 while Crystal Wagner contributed to the team effort going 3/4.
McGhan's Pub 24
Heiser BG's 12
McGhan's Pub served up their first win of the season as power house Jenn Cooper had both a three and single home run. Heather Power contributed on defense with a great catch while bases where loaded and two outs. For Heiser: Connie Strub tripled, Tracey Fuller and Lisa Doyle both had doubles. Lisa Doyle had a great line drive catch at short to make a double play at third base.
Monroe-Gorman Title/Wendy's 23
Thompson Health 2
'Biggie' hits for new comer Monroe-Gorman Title / Wendy's as they walloped Thompson Health. Lead by Lisa Feiock fast running and big hits dominated this game.
Patchen Upper Deckers 19
Canandaigua National Bank 12
Nearly a two hour game in seven innings couldn't stop Patchen Upper Deckers from cashing in their first win against Canandaigua National Bank. For CNB: Donna Leone offered up a triple and double.
Mickey Finns 14
C&C Enterprises 2
Linda Christensen lead Mickey Finns with a 3-3 at bat with a Triple and 3 singles, while Janet Whitcomb went 2-2 on the evening. Kelly Pike, Karen Schantz both added two hits, and Tina Wood belted out a Home Run. Marla Hamilton had a Double play as well. Way to go Mickey Finns!
