Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

The struggling varsity boys' lacrosse team hosted Newark on May 16,and were competitive in the first half. Newark's first goal came on a fluke of sorts - goalie Brendan Hennessey made a great save but dropped the ball, Newark picked it up and tossed it into the net for a score. However Dominic Valerio scored for Midlakes to tie it, then Newark sneaked one by Brendan to take a 2-1 lead after one period.
Midlakes was passing the ball quite well and aggressively challenging loose balls. Nate Stevens scored early in the 2nd period to tie the score again, but Newark scored again less than a minute later. Chris Ledgerwood then tied the score and again Newark slid in another score to take the lead.
Suddenly Brendan was bowled over from behind for the second time in the game, and this time he did not get up. He lay on the ground for several minutes, attended to by the coach and the trainer, and was finally loaded onto the golf cart and returned to the bench where the trainer continued to evaluate him and his equipment was transferred to Clay Hemminger who was the goalie for the remainder of the half.
The seniors and their parents were recognized, honored and photographed at halftime. Seniors Tom Butcher, Dom Valerio, Kyle LaVare, Jeremy Denisi, and Tom Swart each received a rose, a balloon and a sports drink while Athletic Director Dixon referred to them as pioneer risk takers for starting this sport at Midlakes and taking it as far as they could.
Clay was replaced in goal for the second half by jv goalie Jared Schoonerman, and it was as if sharks smelled blood in the water. Their offense picked up, our offense and defense seemed to crumble. Jared made some great saves (8 in all), but the final score was 12-3. Meanwhile Brendan was sent to the hospital with a probable concussion.
Unfortunately we had to play Newark again later in the week in the first round of sectionals, and the result was the same, though the score was closer.
The varsity baseball team hosted North Rose-Wolcott last Tuesday, May 17, in a first round Class B sectional game. This was an interesting game to watch despite the lack of scoring. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to score (NR left 6, Midlakes left 11). There were great defensive plays; Midlakes turned a double play to end the first inning and another in the fourth.
Doug VanderBrook pitched the entire game, striking out two, walking only one, and giving up 5 hits. He had a lot of support from his fielders, and we hit the ball well, just couldn't get the RBI. The one score in the game was North Rose's and came in the 6th on a passed ball. We appeared to score in the same fashion in the bottom of the 7th, but the umpire ruled that the batter had been hit by the pitch, so he sent the runners back and the batter to 1st, loading the bases, but we failed to push anyone across the plate, so our sectional schedule was done.
The modified baseball team took on Geneva's 7th graders the next afternoon. This was a completely different game from the previous day's. Tristan Ester was the starting pitcher, Marley Morales was behind the plate. Tristan struggled some to start, walking 2 in the first inning. A runner who had reached base on a fielder's choice came around to score courtesy of two wild pitches. In the 2nd inning he walked 3, and two of them scored. However, we had scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st so the score was tied, but not for long.
Midlakes sent 16 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second, scoring 11 and leaving 2 on base. Geneva changed pitchers and that quieted the onslaught, but the damage had been done. Erin Kelly started us off with a single; Zack Bassett also had a single. Matt DeHond followed with a perfect bunt that advanced everyone and allowed him to reach base. Harley walked to bring in a run. Other hits in that inning were singles by Kyle Consolie, Jake Clyde, Harley, Tristan Ester, a second hit by Zack and Matt, 2 singles by Travis Goodman, and a double by Austin Collett. Dominic Beniamino took over the pitching duties to start the 4th. Dom has a single in the 3rd inning, Gage Pendergast and Ethan Thornton each singled in the 4th, and Harley singled again.
The jv boys' baseball team had a similar game when they played Pal-Mac the previous week. Unfortunately they were on the losing end of a 17-8 score, due to errors.
Matt Jensen went 4-4 with 2RBIs. Mike Benzer also got 2RBIs while going 1-2. Chris Galliher, Eric Minns, Colin Hotchkiss and Tom Goodman also had hits.
The team bounced back with a much better played game against Mynderse the next day and won, 4-3. Bryant Lead was the winning pitcher, giving up 2 runs in four innings. Matt Jensen picked up the save, allowing 2 hits and 1 run over three innings. The defense was flawless and turned 2 double plays, including one in the last inning with the tying run on first. The offense came from Kyle Tillman ( 2 hits, 2RBIs), Matt Jensen (1 hit, 1 RBI), Mike Benzer (1 hit), and Tom Goodman (1 hit).
In a make-up game last Monday they proved it wasn't a fluke, again winning a nail-biter. Tom Goodman drove in Kyle Tillman with a 2 out base hit in the bottom of the 7th to beat Wayne, 7-6. Kyle was the winning pitcher and got great offensive support. Kyle helped himself with a hit, Tom had one, likewise Colin Hotchkiss, Josh DeBoover, and Matt Jensen. Chris Galliher and Bryant Lead each had 2 singles.
The jv tennis team continued their frustrating season with a home match against Honeoye last Tuesday and lost, 2-3. Again the doubles teams of Mike Green and Joe McGrath and Billy DeJonge and Kevin Donlon won. The first singles match was incredible. Cody Schmitt battled for over two hours, winning the first set, losing the second. He had the lead in the third set but could not hold on and lost it, 5-7.
Their final match of the season was against one of the top jv teams in the league - Marcus Whitman. It also was a marathon. Cody lost the first set, but came back to win the next two and gave Midlakes its only point in the 1-4 loss. Tim Piper at 2nd singles also lost the 1st set, won the 2nd, but then lost the 3rd. The doubles teams, who had turned in several wins in recent matches, lost that day. Coach Webb called it " a strong finish for this team as they showed great improvement as the season progressed."
