DOC ABRAHAM GREEN THUMB MEMORIAL AWARD ANNOUNCED
|
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County with support from Spring Valley Garden and Ayres Farm Market announces the Doc Abraham Green Thumb Memorial Award. This annual award will be presented to the person, business or organization that promotes and enhances the green industry in Ontario County and provides horticultural awareness and education to residents.
In January 2005 Ontario County and the entire Finger Lakes Region lost a friend and pioneer in the Green Industry, Doc Abraham. His Green Thumb radio show, syndicated newspaper columns, and talks around the region had scores of followers and gave people insight on both the practical side of gardening as well as its personal satisfaction. Doc made the phrase "Gotta grow now," a famous sign off slogan during his years on WHAM radio. Doc Abraham and his wife, Katie, made an enormous contribution to the growth of the green industry through educating the home gardener.
The first award will be made at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County's annual Fall Garden Symposium on November 5, 2005. The winner will receive a framed plaque and gift certificates for merchandise from Spring Valley Garden and Ayres Farm Market.
Applications for the award can be obtained at Spring Valley Garden, 3100 County Road 10, Canandaigua; or Ayres Farm Market, at the corner of Route 96 and County Road 28 in Shortsville; or by calling Extension at 585-394-3977 x38. A panel of Master Gardeners, Extension staff and industry representatives will review all applications.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County sponsors an extensive homes and grounds horticulture program with the efforts of its Master Gardeners, a program important to the late Doc Abraham.
