EDITORIAL
JUST WONDERING… By Bob Bowdren |
|
I thought if I used this title again, I would get a lot of attention (I sure did last time). Actually, I'm thinking about the recent school budgets. In our area, 10 were rejected. That looks like 20% and I believe it will get worse in the years to come.
The age ratios have changed and people are living longer. The "Baby Boomers" generation is retired and many folks in that age group are struggling to keep the family home. They cannot afford any increases in real estate taxes, particularly in the small "bedroom" communities.
We have been taught that nothing it too good for our kids' education. I think we must now plug into that equation, "What can we afford?"
The second thing that should be examined is other ways to finance our schools. To be sure, this has been on the table before. Legalized gambling was promoted as a way to finance education. That turns out to be something akin to trying to drain the ocean with a thimble (after all the government political overhead). Anyone have any more ideas?
PS. Wandering the internet, I ran across a commentary by Mike Ford (superintendent of Phelps-Clifton Springs Schools) which fits into this very subject.
