National Association for the Education of Young Children

Canandaigua - Young Children, the journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children recently published "Kyle Lives with His Granny - Where Are His Mommy and Daddy?" in their May 2005 issue supporting grandparents who raise grandchildren. Isabelle Doran Jensen, Extension Resource Educator with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Ontario County collaborated with Jennifer Birckmayer, Senior Extension Associate with the Department of Human Development at Cornell University and other Extension Resource Educators to write the article.
The journal is distributed to more than 100,000 members in more than 350 affiliate groups. Their commitment to excellent programs for children and professional development for teachers is demonstrated through a broad spectrum of services.
Ms. Jensen has been involved with grandparents raising grandchildren since 1991. Her interest in skip generation families lead to the development of a six part curriculum, Parenting The Second Time Around which is utilized nationwide. Grandparents parenting the second time around need social support as well as up-to-date information about effective parenting and available community resources.
Cornell University Cooperative Extension currently conducts a support group for grandparents and a 4-H club for grandkids. The group meets in Canandaigua on the third Tuesday of each month. For more information call 585-394-3977 Ext. 21 or 22 or e-mail idj1@cornell.edu for information and/or resources.
Cornell Cooperative Extension is a non-profit educational organization with a mission to extend new knowledge and research-based information in agriculture, family, and consumer sciences from Cornell University to county residents.
