Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

Due to scheduling conflicts I was never able to see the modified boys' lacrosse team in action. I had planned to take in a game last Thursday but found out that day that the game had been played on Wednesday. (That's what happens when one checks the schedule a week ahead of time to try to plan one's week.) That was their final game at home and they lost to Penn Yan, 7-3. Scoring goals for Midlakes were Tyler Brooks-Lambert (2) and Tony Saracino (1).
Tyler and Tony are just part of the roster that includes Travis Bevins, Tom Cheney, Erik Van Hooft, Ben Uvegas, Jordan Dutcher, Ryan Teed, Conor Hogan, Jeff Driscoll, Mike Newland, Randy Sinack, Nick Judge, Justin Huntsman, Salvatore Fratto, Andrew Smith, Greg Marks, Jason Batchellor, Jeff Parsons, Ken Patane, Mike Iannonie, Joe Prescher, Alex Zehr, and Jon Armstrong.
Their other games last week were against Geneva and Mynderse. The Mynderse game was an 8-2 win. Scoring for Midlakes were Tyler Brooks-Lambert (3), Ben Uvegas (3), Travis Bevins (1) and Randy Sinack (1). The Geneva game was a 5-4 loss. Tyler scored twice, Ben Uvegas netted one, and Travis Bevins had a goal and an assist. The final game was scheduled for May 31 in Canandaigua. After the Penn Yan game the season record was 6-7, meaning the team has a chance for a .500 season, all it takes is a win against Canandaigua.
The modified baseball team beat Pal-Mac last week in a squeaker, 5-4. Relief pitcher Jake Clyde struck out the final batter of the game, leaving 2 on base. He earned the save pitching three solid innings, giving up only one run, unearned. Starting pitcher Tristan Ester earned the win with four strong innings to start the game. During the game Erin Kelly had two hits and Travis Goodman had one, but it was bunts that got things going. All of our runs came in the 4th inning, spearheaded by bunts off the bats of Kyle Consolie and Jake Clyde.
The girls' modified lacrosse team finished their season last Thursday with a win over Mercy. Goalie Allison Strub made 10 saves in the game, Kaila Fox and Caity Kumkey trade off face-off duties. I had seen this team earlier in the season, and the improvement in passing from early to season end was remarkable. We also seemed to be more aggressive in going after loose balls, trying to intercept opponents' passes, and attacking the goal. Midlakes took three shots on goal in the first few minutes. Kaila Fox and Marki Michaels both scored for Midlakes in the first period, while Mercy scored only once.
The second period was marked by two goals each from Caity Kumkey and Brooke Adams, while Mercy again scored one. The third period had a bit of drama. Marki Michaels appeared to have her second goal of the game, but it was disallowed. At the other end, Allison made a stop, moved her stick and the ball rolled in for a Mercy score. Ali Hemminger scored for us. Jen Stoffel and Gina Phamisith scored in the final period, Brooke scored her third of the game, and Kaila her second on a beautiful feed from Gina. The final score was 11-5; the team's season record is 9-3.
The Section V golf tournament state qualifier was held last Monday, May 23, at Wellsville Country Club. The cut-off score for states was 74, but none of our guys made it. Andrew Flood shot 80, Jordan Wilson 81, and Zach Maslyn 84. These guys were averaging 38-41 last fall for nine holes, so they basically shot their average. "Unfortunately," said Coach Ciciarelli, "they ran up against guys who shot in the 70's."
Thus ends the (school) golf season.
The track teams have been involved recently in an assortment of meets leading up to the state track meet. Last week was the Meet of Champions. I haven't been able to get in touch with the coaches so only have the FLT reporting, which has been scant However, as of last Thursday, these Midlakes athletes had qualified for states: Nate Parsons and Kyle Brown in the steeplechase, Travis Buttaccio in the long jump, Chad Ingerick and Zack Lambert in the pole vault, Marissa Gray in the 3000 and the steeplechase, and Sheila Niles in the discus.
Ryan Forshay, who hurt his knee in lacrosse practice in April, had surgery on May 6, when it was discovered that the damage was worse than suspected. Among other things it has meant "no weight" on it, a real challenge for an active teen.
