FLCC FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2005 BENEFACTOR AWARD
|
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 31, 2005) - The Finger Lakes Community College Foundation recently honored Keith Glover, of Manchester, as the Foundation's 2005 Benefactor Award recipient at the 21st Annual Widmer's Honors Reception in Canandaigua. Glover earned recognition for his support of the FLCC Foundation in memory of his wife, Joanne, and her career at the College.
In 2002 Mr. Glover entered into an agreement with the Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship in his wife's memory. Made by Mr. Glover on behalf of the Glover family and friends, the initial contribution, along with the endowment, would serve to preserve Mrs. Glover's memory at the College. The Joanne Glover Memorial Scholarship supports one student a year with $500 to assist that student in reaching his or her goals. Mrs. Glover served as secretary to two presidents of the College; she started working at the Main Street campus in 1967 and retired from the Lincoln Hill campus in 1991. She passed away on March 14, 2001.
In addition to supporting FLCC, Mr. Glover is a generous patron of the Sands Cancer Center and a longtime supporter of both the Canandaigua Moose Club and the Shortsville American Legion.
The Foundation established its Benefactor Award in 1998 to recognize individuals and companies that demonstrate exemplary support for the mission of the FLCC Foundation. Honorees receive a sculpture by Wayne Williams, FLCC art professor emeritus, that depicts a person's hand holding an acorn, a metaphor for the nurturing of the seed of knowledge. Previous recipients of the Benefactor Award include Susanne Gardner Kennedy (1998), the late Marvin Sands and Widmer's Wine Cellars Inc. (1999), Mrs. Florence M. Muller (2000), Dr. John and Mrs. Carole Hayden (2001), the ExxonMobil Foundation (2002), George K. Fraley (2003), and Janelle Plumb '92 (2004).
The FLCC Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable corporation established to seek financial support for the College from the private sector. The Foundation accepts donations for scholarships, equipment purchases, special projects, and faculty development. For more information, please contact the Foundation at (585) 394-3500, ext. 7386, or by e-mail at foundation@flcc.edu.

FLCC OFFERS ONLINE LITERATURE COURSE ON HARRY POTTER SERIES
|
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (June 2, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College will be offering its first ever entirely online course, ENG 207 Topics in Literature: "The Harry Potter Phenomenon," taught by Assistant Professor of English Trista Merrill. This course will be offered during the summer session, from June 27 - Aug. 5.
The class will take a close look at the books to examine plots, characters, and themes that create the immensely popular world of Harry Potter. Students will also explore the mythical themes of Harry Potter by diving into the theoretical work of myths, heroes, and initiation rights in order to pinpoint the reason behind the success of the series. It is highly recommended that students read at least the first four Harry Potter books prior to the start of class.
The class will be conducted entirely online using WebCT, a self-contained and accessible platform for all registered students in the course with Internet access. This platform allows the professor to give quizzes, tests, and reading assignments online, as well as hold classroom discussions via message boards or real time chat rooms. This alternative method of instruction contains all of the elements of a classroom setting, allowing the student to learn from home on a computer.
For more information about this new online course, contact Trista Merrill at 585-394-3500, ext. 7357, or email merriltm@flcc.edu.
