Relatives As Parents Program (RAPP) Retreat Held at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills
|
Bristol- Grandparents and Relatives Raising Other's Children from Seneca, Wayne, and Ontario Counties participated in the Relatives As Parents Program (RAPP) Retreat weekend June 24- 25th 2005. The retreat took place at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills. Families participated in activities that strengthen the unique family structure of relative caring for other's children. William Armbruster, AARP Associate New York State Director, was the featured speaker on Saturday for the adult group. Mr. Armbruster, who lives in Webster, explained how the families can advocate for the best interest of their grandchild/child in their care. He led the relative caregivers through an activity to frame the issue of grandparent/relative care. Each family received "A Tool Kit for Advocacy 2002", published by the Joint Public Affairs Committee for Older Adults, Institute for Senior Action in New York City.
The fourteen children who attended ranged in ages from 3 to 17, participated in traditional activities with 4-H camp staff like fishing, hiking, Project Adventure activities, slip and slide and a campfire in the evening.
