Newscasts git m'goat, bein' ancient an' all. Iraq War was wrong from the git go, but like many things in m' lifetime our govmint an' military make the same mistakes. Our State Department ain't far behind. Another story for another time.
When Truman sent troops inta Korea our military was a shambles of WW 2. If Ruskies had headed fer Cherbough the Allies wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in Hades. Our Republicrat leaders had decimated our military.
We got our butt kicked initially in Korea, an' only brilliant field officers' exploits turned the thing 'round, not generals or leaders. Lost that'n at the conference table, no sense chewin' old cabbage. Leaders who were s'posed t' lead, din't! Has happened several times since then, but---.
Aim in Korea was t' train ROK troops t' fight fer their country. Except, warn't exactly what ROK's had in mind. Long as Americans were doin' the dyin' they figgered they'd spend time ahind the lines stealin' an' hustlin' our troops. As the war progressed they put more ROK units in line. Won't speculate how good they were, don't wanna create an international incident. Some were good, majority were bad until they got 'nuff combat under their belt t' stand an' deliver, as the sayin' goes.
Were that only time this happened might say our leaders did a good job! However, wait until NoKos come crost the border t' see how good ROKs are. Proof is in the puddin', an' they ain't made it yet. Move outta Viet Nam, where ROKs did well, but a'gin, our leaders sed "We'll train Viets soldiers t' fight". Sure, an' it was a big failure Viets picked, like Koreans did initially, who was winnin' on a particular day. Finally common sense prevailed, an' Nixon did what Kennedy wanted t' do afore his death, get outta there, cut our losses. Somethin' went wrong there, think 'bout it. (Don't wanna rehash this, but how could an average shooter firin' an Italian rifle that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn kill Kennedy at that distance?) We lost lotta kids there, draftees mostly. Elites din't go, had deferments! T'day veterans war are ostracized by Card/Rove politics machine.
Did we larn? Well, not really. We're goin' t' train Iraqis t' police an' fight their own battles, with Americans givin' 'em support. Sure, like Korea and Nam, the soldier trained in AM changed sides at night!
Final thought? When will our leaders acknowledge as American are dyin', our Allies (?) are standin' back an' watchin'? Don't give me "expert" generals parrotin' party line. Iraqis'll never be ready t' fight, ever, lessen it's t' kill us. Every military our leaders trained t' fight their own have not. How long afore the first terrorist bomb goes off in our streets! Will it be Mexican or Mosle
