PHELPS BPW DISBANDS
|
The Phelps Business & Professional Women's group at their June 20, 2005 meeting decided to disband due to low participation. The BPW group had been in Phelps since 1954 when they started out with 45 charter members. BPW has always been an integral part of the Phelps community. They have been civic-minded and political throughout the years. When the Phelps Sauerkraut Festival started, Phelps BPW arranged for the choosing of the Queens for several years. They also had a booth at the festival to sell baked goods with sauerkraut in it.
For many years a "Woman of the Year" was chosen by this group in recognition of National Business Women's Week, the third week of October. Every year a Christmas family was given the group to help a needy family through the holidays with gifts for the whole family and Christmas dinner. For 40 plus years, Phelps BPW held Red Cross blood drives.
BPW signifies Women Helping Women since 1919 not only through networking and programs, but also through legislation, politics, health care, Equal Pay, etc. Business & Professional Women is for all working women no matter what career a woman has.
