NOZZOLIO: NO GAS DRILLING IN HEWITT AND
BEAR SWAMP STATE FORESTS
Contacts DEC Regarding Threat to City of Syracuse Water Supply
|
Albany - Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R,C-Fayette) today announced that he is firmly opposed to any plans that would allow natural gas drilling in Hewitt and Bear Swamp State Forests. The State Forests lie within the watershed of Skaneateles Lakes, which is the primary water supply for approximately 200,000 people in the City of Syracuse and surrounding areas.
"It is a serious concern that gas exploration and drilling in Hewitt and Bear Swamp State Forests could contaminate the Skaneateles Lake watershed, putting at risk the entire drinking water supply for the City of Syracuse," said Senator Nozzolio. "I have been contacted by many constituents who are seriously concerned with this and I firmly agree with them that the Department of Environmental Conservation cannot allow gas drilling in these state forests."
Currently, Hewitt State Forest and Bear Swamp State Forest are listed on the Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) gas lease bid list, which would allow natural gas drilling in these areas.
The Senator has written a letter to DEC Commissioner Denise Sheehan calling for the removal of the State Forests from the gas lease bid list because of his concerns with the possible contamination of the local water supply. Senator Nozzolio has also spoken out in the past in opposition to oil and gas exploration and drilling in the Finger Lakes National Forest.
"In addition to the possible contamination of the Skaneateles Lake watershed, I am extremely concerned that gas drilling would severely harm the pristine environment of the forest preserves and endanger wildlife and natural resources. The environmental risk of drilling far outweighs any potential benefits," concluded Nozzolio.
Attached is a copy of Senator Nozzolio's letter to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
