FLCC OFFERS NEW PIANO TECHNOLOGY AND TUNING COURSES IN GENEVA THIS FALL
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (July 7, 2005) - Finger Lakes Community College is currently registering students for two new credit courses in piano technology and tuning this fall at the Geneva Extension Center on Pulteney Street. Beginning Sept. 6, Piano Tuning I will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m.; Keyboard History and Technology I will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Each class will include both lecture and hands-on lab experience.
Piano Tuning I, a three-credit-hour course, offers an introduction to the tuning and temperament theory of keyboard instruments from 1500 to 1850. Students will study and practice the tuning of historical temperaments on modern and historical keyboard instruments. They will be required to purchase a piano-tuning tool kit.
Keyboard History and Technology I, also a three-credit-hour course, offers an introduction to the design theory and maintenance of keyboard instruments from 1500 to 1850. Students will study and practice the maintenance and repair of modern and historical keyboard instruments. They will be required to purchase an action regulation tool kit.
The College is accepting donations of pianos in playable condition and woodworking tools for use in the lab portion of the courses.
Piano tuners and technicians are often self-employed individuals who perform their services on-site in private homes; academic music departments; professional concert halls; retail establishments; and piano manufacturing, rebuilding, and supply companies. Some in the field work full time, while others perform services part time, often combining this work with teaching, performance, and even non-music-related jobs.

The Piano Technicians Guild, a national educational and professional organization, has a membership of approximately 4,100 people who have passed the Guild's exams to earn the universally recognized Registered Piano Technician (RPT) certification. In addition, as many as 10,000 to 15,000 tuners and technicians work without Guild affiliation.
Christopher Glattly, RPT, owner of Glattly Pianoforte in Canandaigua, will serve as the instructor for both courses. Glattly received a B.A. in music from Michigan State University under the guidance of noted piano-tuning scholar Owen Jorgenson. Upon moving to Rochester, Glattly worked at the Eastman School of Music under Joseph Balconi and, in 1983, started Glattly Pianoforte, a private tuning and concert technician business. In 1988, he left Eastman to start a piano rebuilding business, retaining the name Glattly Pianoforte, in Canandaigua with his wife, Jill, a fellow MSU graduate. In 2003, they opened a retail store for new and used pianos on Main Street in Canandaigua.
