Local Men travels to 2005 National Boy Scout Jamboree
This will make the 13th trip in nearly 48 years
|
SHORTSVILLE. NY - July 27, 2005 -- The first time George A. Payne left for the National Scout Jamboree was back in 1957. Carl Harter, his brother-in-law, and George took a tractor trailer full of supplies for the Scouts to Valley Forge, PA where the Jamboree was held then.
In 1973, he joined his youngest son and his pack from Shortsville on the trip to the National Scout Jamboree.
The experience was so meaningful, that he felt motivated to continue to attend, even after his sons were out of scouting. Over the past 45 years he has made the trek to Virginia with a friend or two from the area to work on the subcamp committee.
The Boy Scouts of America have held the National Scout Jamboree, every 4 years, since 1937. They have been held in various places around the USA, but in 1981, they developed a permanent site in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.
For 2 weeks every 4 years the Boy Scouts of America take over approximately 12,000 acres of land in the rolling hills of Caroline County, VA. This faculty turns into a city of nearly 38,000 Scouts and leaders. Imagine 17,000 tents and 3,500 patrol kitchens popping up in a matter of hours.
The Jamboree promotes the true spirit of Scouting. Daily activities include archery, bikathlon, buckskin games, confidence course, conservation programs, scuba, kayak fun, racing shell run, and raft encounters.
Mr. Payne is currently attending the 2005 Jamboree. This is not the only Scouting activity Mr. Payne is involved with. He is on the committee to inspect the scout camps in the area. Before scouts can spend the summer learning valuable lessons at the camps in the area, they must be inspected for safety. These safety precautions make sure our boys are safe all summer.
Mr. Payne's full time job is operating the NAPA Auto Parts store in Shortsville. He is also the President of the Ontario County Fair, which coincidentally is being held during the Jamboree, so Mr. Payne will miss it this year.
