The Midlakes Babe Ruth Baseball organization had two travel teams this summer, one for 12 and under, the other for 10 and under. The travel teams are all-star teams, made up of those players whom the coaches felt excelled during the regular spring season.
Over the 4th of July weekend the teams traveled to Syracuse for the Regional Tournament. The 10 and under team placed 3rd in division 4, our area's division, and went on to the Lyons Tournament on the July 15th weekend, where they placed 2nd.
The 12 and under team placed 1st in the Regional Tournament by beating Canandaigua 6-2 and then Honeoye 5-4. This 1st place finish allowed the Midlakes team to advance to the New York State Babe Ruth Tournament for the first time in 8 years. This year the tournament was held in Buffalo over the July 15th weekend.
We played Springville in the first game, on Friday. We had a 1-0 lead after the first inning and built that to 3-1 after the 2nd, with the help of a triple from Kameron Austen. Springville rallied in the 3rd, scoring 4 runs to take a 5-3 lead that carried to the 5th inning, when Midlakes scored 6 runs to win, 10-5. Adam Lannon went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. Besides the 2nd inning triple, Kameron hit a single and a double and shut out the Springville team to end the game and earn "Midlakes player of the game" recognition.
The next game pitted us against Mathewson-MacCarthy, the host team, from Amherst. M&M came out of the chute like gangbusters, jumping to a 9-1 lead after 2 innings, and we never recovered, losing 14-1. Kameron Austen went 2 for 2 (both doubles), Derrick Hayden was 1 for 2 with a double, and Dominick Beniamino went 1 for 2 also. Dom was named Midlakes player of the game for his outstanding play in the field to go with the hit.
Our third game was against Lou Gehrig, also from Amherst. Midlakes spotted them 5 runs in the first but came back with 2 of our own in the second. The score stayed 5-2 through the 5th inning, but in the 6th LG scored 4 more runs for a 9-2 win, ending our participation in the tournament. Dominick was 2 for 3 at the plate, and Kameron was named Midlakes player of the game for his outstanding pitching performance that doesn't show in the score.
The head coach for the state tournament was Tim VanDamme, who is also the President of the Midlakes Babe Ruth Baseball organization. He reports that this was a very good "team," with everyone contributing to the very successful season.
The roster for the 12 and under all-star team follows: Dominick Beniamino, Kyle Ficarella, Shane Sweeney, Ryan Kelly, Darrick Hayden, Dalton Donk, Kameron Austen,
Adam Lannon, Ethan Maslyn, John Rau, Brandon Sauve, and Brandon Brege.
The bench coaches were Randy Joseph, Joe Sweeney, and Bill Donk.
The roster for the 10 and under all-star team included: Curtis Blackman, Nicholas Brooks, Garrett Bunce, Andrew Burnett, Collin Fox, Mikey Gelder, Mason Jones, Jacob Kemp, Zakary Klick, Ricky LaPaglia, Michael Principio, Nicklaus Waite, and Jeryd Graham. The coaches were Mark Bunce, Rick LaPaglia, and Ed Kemp.
I'm guessing we'll be reading about many of the boys from these teams in the near future.
