CLIFTON SPRINGS LIBRARY CELEBRATES 110 YEARS

Clifton Springs Library celebrated 110 years of service to the community on August 9 with an Open House at the library. Visitors enjoyed cake and punch and participated in drawings for door prizes. Free books were given to pre-school children.
Happy Birthday to Our Library
Shown here are 5 year old Karisa Mae Hemen (birthday on August 9th) and 10 year old Kyle Mallaber with the library birthday cake.
The library was established in August 1895 when a group of 5 community members petitioned the State Education Department for a charter. The first library was named the Peirce Free Library Association and was housed in a room in the YMCA building. Subsequent charter changes included two name changes and changes to the number of library trustees. In 1968 the name was changed to the present Clifton Springs Library.
Along with name changes the library also moved its location twice. In 1961 it was moved to the front of the Village Hall on Main Street, then a few years later to the back and upper story of the Village Hall. It was soon evident that the library needed more room, and in 1990 it was given the former New York Central Railroad Station. The building was renovated and two wings were added. This provided much needed space to house the library's collection.
Many changes have occurred in its 110-year history. The library is a member of the Pioneer Library System and part of the OWWL integrated circulation system. As such, library users have access to materials in 42 libraries, and can view the catalog on line and request materials from participating OWWL libraries through their home computers.
The library Board of Trustees and the Staff encourage the public to stop in during the Open House and celebrate the library's service to the community.

On hot summer days like these there is nothing better than a nice cold ice cream cone or even a milkshake. Here is a delicious recipe for a strawberry milk shake.
1 Cup sliced strawberries
1 pint strawberry ice cream, softened
2 cups cold milk
1 cup lemon sherbet, softened
Whipped cream
Place all ingredients except whipped cream in blender, cover and blend on high speed until well combined and fairly smooth, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately in chilled glasses with a few dollops of whipped cream on the bottom of each glass. This tasty treat may sound unhealthy but remember everyone needs their Three-A-Day and the milk in this milk shake counts as one. This is a message from your local Dairy Princess and the American Dairy Association.
