ROTARY'S CAMP ONSEYAWA FOR KIDS REACHES 50 YEARS OLD
|
Rotary Camp Onseyawa is a residential camp for children, ages 9 - 16. This year marks 50 years of serving physically and mentally challenged youth.
Fifty years ago, when Gail Reitman of Waterloo was told that she couldn't go to camp with her twin sister, because she was confined to a wheelchair, she and her parents went to the right place for help. They contacted Neil Marvin now of Florida. He and the Rotary clubs of Ontario, Seneca, Yates and Wayne counties formed Camp Onseyawa. Since its first camping season, children with challenges have been getting a chance of having the total camping experience that we all remember. Rotarians supply specialized nursing and dietary services and hire staff that is specially trained to make sure that every child has a way to enjoy every program and activity. Rotary has provided much needed respite for countless families. These families grow to depend on this two-week camping program as a time to recharge the batteries for the very difficult job they have all year long.
A celebration of these 50 years of service took place at Camp Babcock Hovey, Willard, NY, Sunday, Aug. 21st. Past campers, staff, and all Rotarians were all invited to attend.
