Midlakes Sports

It's been a long, hot summer, and believe it or not, even though school will not start for another week, the fall sports teams have been practicing for 2 ½ weeks. Also, the games have started. The girls' tennis teams began last Friday against Canandaigua, the golf team began on Monday, and the soccer teams will begin their seasons as usual with the Labor Day Weekend tournaments that will begin on Friday, Sept. 2 at 10am with the girls' games (Midlakes will play at noon), and the boys' games will begin at 2pm with Midlakes playing at 4.
Coach Dave Webb is again working with the jv girls' tennis team and announced the following roster: Arian Burnett-Farrands, Samantha Hemminger, Ashley Vehec,
Genevieve Pelletreau, Ashley Flye, Karissa Gage, Angela Ridley, Kayla Beach, Liz Baker. He reported that Canandaigua took all 5 matches in last Friday's meeting. At 1st singles, Arian won the first set and lost the next two; Sam at 2nd singles and Liz at 3rd singles lost in straight sets. The same fate befell Ashley V. and Gen at 1st doubles and Angela and Kayla at 2nd doubles.
Coach Ciciarelli has some strong returnees for the golf team this fall and hopes for a repeat of last year's league title. Jordan Wilson, R.C. Weston and Zach Maslyn are the senior leaders of the group. The juniors are Ernie Werzinger, Adam Scheele, and Pat Phillips. Two freshmen have joined the group: Krista Baroody and Brennan Sullivan.
Coach Gerry Benedict has something he hasn't had recently: enough girls for a team entry at the cross country meets. Now, if injuries and ineligibility stay away, the experienced runners can make a mark for Midlakes as well as for themselves. There are only 5 girls: Morgan Heusler, Bethany Notebaert, Meggin Duchesneau, Sam McNulty, and Brittany Jansen.
He has several experienced runners returning on the boys' team and some new blood as well. Again he's hoping that injuries and ineligibility visit some other school.
Senior Morgan Hoven is joined by juniors Cullen Johnston, Jamison Reed, Chris Stobie and Mike Case and freshman John Armstrong.
The modified roster includes 6 boys: Mike Baldwin, Garrett Heusler, Cody Schmitt, Mike Stone, Jordan Miller, and Dylan Parmele; and 3 girls; Jesse Casler, Tabitha Richards, and Emily Rinaldo.
So far I have received only one soccer roster, that of the varsity boys. Coach Scalise has several returnees from the team that battled Mynderse in a fierce struggle in sectionals last fall and left their hearts on that field in Seneca Falls. There are some big shoes to fill, but seniors Aaron Dorman, Ricky Dawley, Riley O'Neil, Tim Piper, and Ben Bengston intend to lead juniors Brett Adams, Kyle Brown, Jesse Goodman, Ben Sheppard, Rob Barber, James Blythe, Mike Cardinale, Tyler Coon, Russell Goodman and Cody Maines and sophomores Matt Heintz, Matt Jensen, and Ben Sheppard in a season that's at least as successful as last year's. Remember, this team and its jv counterpart will begin the season this Friday at 4pm. The girls' varsity and jv teams will take the field for their season openers at about noon.
