The previous week was a busy one, both for all our teams and for me. Consequently, while our athletes were giving it their all in assorted venues, I was only able to see the boys' soccer games against Waterloo last Monday, Sept. 12.
The jv team scored early in the contest and kept the pressure on to score again soon afterward. Several Waterloo possessions resulted in near misses, but that only counts in horseshoes. The halftime score was 2-0, Midlakes. In the second half the Waterloo goalie made a great save, but it was followed up with a Midlakes "score by committee." There were two more balls that found the net off Midlakes kicks for a total of five, including three from Conor Hogan whose dad had promised him a box of sugary breakfast cereal if he could do that. The final score was 5-0, Midlakes.
On the varsity field there was a much different story. Midlakes came close to scoring on the first sequence, and Waterloo nearly scored a few minutes later. Suddenly we were knocking on the door again, and then they were. Finally Midlakes scored twice, which seemed to momentarily deflate Waterloo. Ben Sheppard was very active on defense, adding to their frustration.
Waterloo finally scored on a crazy play - the shot hit the crossbar, bounced back and then was kicked in. That seemed to energize them, and they scored again soon afterward. We answered before the break so the halftime score was 3-2, Midlakes. The second half was marked by some great saves by both goalies, but Waterloo tied the score with a shot that bounced off goalie Ben Bengston's hands and in. The game ended in that 3-3 tie. All Midlakes goals were scored by Matt Haintz.
I have received rosters from the football teams and the boys' volleyball teams but have not seen any of those teams. Since I hope to see the jv football team on Saturday night, I will save that roster until I can talk about their game.
The varsity football squad is again being coached by Chris Moyer, with assistance from Lyle Dixon and Mike Nicot. Their roster includes seniors Torey Pieters, Jeff Benedict, Caleb Frederick, Nate Stevens, Randy Kuhlman, Jesse DeBoover, Ryan Forshay, Chris Teed, Wes Carlson, Nick Lapresi, Dan Laurenza, Josh Sauve, and Craig Falkey. The juniors are Adam Norsen, Greg VanderBrook, Mike Hixon, Josh Shaffer, Mark Triplett, Jonah Trammel, Brandon Wentworth, Thomas Goodman, William Hanvey, Gus Rindfleisch, Josh Moracco, Jimmy Phamisith, Clay Hemminger, Chris Galliher, and Bryant Lead. The lone sophomore is Nick Newland - hopefully the upperclassmen don't make the "youngster" carry all the team supplies.
The tennis teams enjoyed wins over their counterparts from HAC last week. The varsity team won by a score of 3-2; this was the first time the girls' team had beaten HAC while Coach Hicks has been at the helm, and it gave the team a 5-2 record as of last Thursday.
The jv team score was 4-1. First singles was the biggest battle. Arian Burnett-Farr won the 1st set but lost the next two in tiebreakers to give HAC their one point. Samantha Hemminger won the tiebreaker in the first set and won the second set as well. Liz Baker won in convincing fashion at 3rd singles, straight sets of 6-0. Jen Pelletreau and Karissa Gage won the same way at 1st doubles. The duo of Ashley Vehec and Angela Ridley received a forfeit at 2nd doubles. This team had a 3-1-1 record as of last Thursday.
The cross country teams ran at Marion last week and did not do well against any of the opponents there. Morgan Hoven finished 6th in the boys' race, but it wasn't nearly enough. These teams are running at "home" (Camp Ditmer) this Tuesday at 4:30.
The golf team lost a heartbreaker last week at Geneva. The medalists (low scores) were Jordan Wilson and Zach Maslyn, who tied at 38. They were followed by RC Weston at 43, and at that point Midlakes was leading by 10. However, high scores by the remaining two finishers handed Geneva a 217-220 win
I hope to be able to see the boys' volleyball teams in a rare home appearance this Friday, Sept. 23, so I'll include those rosters with some commentary on those games next week.
