The jv tennis team had a very busy week, with games last Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Monday's match was against Newark and it ended in a 3-3 tie. Arian Burnett-Farrands won at 1st singles, Samantha Hemminger and Liz Baker lost at 2nd and 3rd singles respectively. Gen Pelletreau/Karissa Gage won at 1st doubles as did Kayle Beach/Ashley Flye at 3rd. Ashley Vehec/Angela Ridley lost at 2nd doubles.
Tuesday's contest at Marcus Whitman resulted in a 4-2 victory. All three singles players mentioned above won, as did the Kayla Beach/Ashley Flye that were playing 3rd doubles that day. The other two doubles teams lost.
Wednesday the team traveled to Victor and tied, 3-3. This time all the singles players won their matches, and all the doubles teams lost. Friday they headed to Wayne where the result was another 3-3 tie. This time Arian lost, while Samantha and Liz won at their singles positions. Gen and Karissa lost, Ashley V. and Angela won and Kayla and Ashley F. lost a close one in the doubles contests. As of last Friday this team had a 4-1-4 record with the last regular match of the season scheduled for Monday, Sept. 26. Next week they will go to a jv doubles tournament.
The cross country teams hosted Canandaigua and Marcus Whitman on Tuesday, Sept. 20, and they are now running back on campus. The start and end points are back next to the newly created softball diamond. The modified teams were running "just for practice," since they had not had enough practices to be eligible to compete.
In the varsity girls' race a Canandaigua runner jumped out at the start, led the entire way, and finished about a minute ahead of the competition. Canandaigua runners finished in the first 7 spots. Our first runner across the line was Meggin Duchesneau, 8th.
Bethany Notebaert was 12th, Morgan came in shortly behind her in 13th and Sam McNulty was 17th. Brittany Jansen has dropped out, leaving only 4 girls, not enough for a regulation team.
In the boys' race, Canandaigua took the first 3 spots, and Aaron Hoven was 4th. His brother, Morgan, provided some drama coming up to tie for 5th. Jamison Reed finished 7th. The times seemed to be longer than each runner's average, and Chris Stobie, who finished in 14th position, thought the humidity had slowed him down. Others thought the winding nature of the course might have been the cause.
The modified boys' soccer team started the season last Wednesday, Sept. 21, with a 2-2 tie against visiting Newark. The score was 1-0 Newark after one period. Midlakes executed a nice play early in the second period and nearly scored; at that point it looked like that might be the story for the day. Our goalie, Jesse Festa, made some good saves, and the score remained unchanged at halftime.
In the 3rd period only a series of spectacular saves prevented us from scoring early, but Newark scored after our goalie had been lured out of the net to take a 2-0 lead. Carlos Naranjo scored our first goal over their goalie's outstretched hands before the 3rd period ended, and Dillon Lapresi scored for us in the 4th in a very similar looking play.
Besides the above-mentioned players, the roster includes Robert Buchwald, Jason Phillips, Chris Roll, Kyle Consolie, Brendan Severson, David Powers, Evan Jones, Chris Rickerson, Ryan Kelly, Jason Celestino, Cody Wilkes, Mike Avanzato, Zach Scherbyn, Eric Ransley, and Joseph Lord. This team is again being coached by Peter Cheney.
Last Friday the varsity and jv boys' volleyball teams hosted Liverpool in yet another non-league match. In the first jv game Midlakes ran up a 6-0 lead the finally erred to give Liverpool an opening which they used to tie the game at 7. From that point we traded points and the serve, neither team getting more than a few points ahead. We lost that game 25-22.
There was no lead for either team to start the 2nd game; it was close from the beginning until suddenly Liverpool began to put together a lead, 16-10, 19-15, 21-17. Midlakes had chances but kept stumbling until we finally tied the game at 23, and pulled off a 26-24 win.
In the 3rd game, Midlakes ran up a 7-2 lead; then we "took time off" mentally and physically, frittering away the lead, and then tying at 8. We then took another break and found ourselves down 13-9. We lost the 3rd game, 25-17.
The varsity match was exactly that - two similarly talented teams played some exciting (frustrating) games. All four games were very close early, often tied, many lead changes, neither team able to take control. In the first game there was a tie at 17 before we started making errors that let them run their score to 21. Then we came alive and clawed our way to 20 but lost this game, 25-21.
The second game was very close early again, but we managed to work a 5 point lead and keep it for awhile until they tied us at 16. From a 21-20 score we pulled out a 25-22 victory. The 3rd game was close early also. We took it from a tie at 9 to a 16-9 score with Dan Mowery serving. They made a run late but we won this game, 25-19. In the 4th game we worked from a tie at 7 to a 25-18 win to win the match, 3-1.
Mike Witter is again coaching the jv team and has released the following roster: Tony Mineo, Zach Brooks, Jake Clyde, Mike Dhalle, Jake Kyler, Tony Cordero, Ryan Teed, Ben Allen, David Crouch, and Panikos Cummings.
Coach Kyle Salisbury is again coaching the varsity team with assistance from recent graduates Dave MacUmber, Jeff Snyder, and Chris Scherbyn. The team members are Chris Kauder, Mark DeCook, Ryan McConnon, Al Fratto, Alex Gilmore, Neil Scheible, Pete Fellenz, AJ DeSain, Tyler DiCicco, Josh DeBoover, Dan Mowery, and EJ Wells-Spicer.
I received a phone call from an excited parent late Thursday evening. Louise Heusler wanted me to know that Midlakes' newest team had won their first meet ever. The modified girls' swim team traveled to Canandaigua and won, 220-217. I'll have to get a roster for that group from the coach, Kathy Morlock.
