The modified boys' soccer team hosted victor last Tuesday, Sept. 29, on a lovely day for outdoor sports. Our defense was caught napping up field and allowed Victor to score over the upward stretched hands of goalie Jesse Festa, who was all alone. After that score they kept pressing but were unable to finish any forays. Kyle Consolie was very active on defense, but Victor scored an empty-netter for a 2-0 lead at halftime. Our offense seemed timid.
In the second half our defense gathered energy, and actually give the Victor goalie something to do. Zach Scherbyn fed Robert Buchwald a perfect pass, and we scored. We did a fair amount of threatening during the remainder of the game, and Kyle, who had been moved to offense, was in the thick of it, nearly scoring on more than one attempt. Jesse made several saves in our goal to keep the score at a 2-1 final.
The girls' modified soccer program is fielding two teams this year, "A" and "B" for no discernible reason. The "A" team, coached by Carolyn Wescott, hosted Canandaigua last Wednesday, on another nice day for outdoor activity. (One needs to take advantage of the nice weather and avoid things like the deluge of rain and the high winds we had last week along with the nice weather.)

Canandaigua scored very early in this game. Soon afterward we caught a break when their shot hit the crossbar and no one could finish, but that was about it for luck for us. The score was 3-0 after one quarter. We had generated almost no offense and were constantly backed up, trying to defend our goal against a much quicker and more talented opponent. In the second quarter we were able to get the offense going and took some shots on goal but did not score. In the meantime, they continued to score and had a 7-0 lead by halftime.
The second half we looked better, putting up more offense than before and a better defense. We threatened several times, most notably in the person of Shannon Murphy, but were unable to put one in. The final score was 9-0. Before we beat ourselves up over this score, let's remember that Canandaigua has a program that lets these girls play soccer virtually year-round.
Besides Shannon, the others on this roster are: Liz Cooley, Aliza DeWilde, Rachel Donk, Emma Fagner, Ali Hemminger, Kelsey Knitter, Ali Maher, Liz Maloney, Ali Millerd, Abbey Notter, Grace Owens, Mary Riley, Caitlin Suchecki, Meghan Tillman and Brittany Wright.
Cathy Morlock, with assistance from Kristin Wrobbel, is coaching the brand new team at Midlakes this season, the modified girls' swim team. Cathy, a counselor in the middle school, is from Hamburg, NY where she was part of the swimming and diving team in high school. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Buffalo, and her masters' is from Canisius. She is very excited to be a part of this new (for us) sport and has taken advantage of the help offered by Kristin, the high school social worker, who will soon be off on maternity leave. They have meets every Tuesday and Thursday; they won on Sept. 22 against Canandaigua and tied Newark on Sept. 27 before they had their first home meet, hosting Victor on Sept. 29.
A word of warning to anyone considering going to see a swim meet - the noise is deafening. Ear plugs might be helpful, but then you probably would not be able to hear the announcements, which I had trouble understanding even while hearing them.
Victor was good (the best we did was 2nd in any event) and lucky (one reason we finished out of first was our turns - we lost ground in every one, would nearly make it up before the lap ended and lose it again). We'll be better at that as the season progresses.
The 200 medley relay team, the 200 freestyle relay team, Morgan Doyle in diving, Devan Lapresi in the 100 freestyle, and whoever was our best finisher in the 200 freestyle were our second place finishers. The score was 100-47, Victor, giving the team a 1-1-1 record. The remaining home meets are on 10/4, 10/11, and 10/20.
The captains for the team are Katie Baldwin and Nicole Owens. In addition to Morgan and Devan, the rest of this hardworking group of pioneers are: Molly Arthur, Bethany Baroody, Tara Beckens, Jessica Coulombe, Mareasa Garver, Elizabeth Grimm, Gigi Heusler, Haley Jones, Amber Landschoot, Morgan Lapresi, Erin Pollot, Ashley Raty, Hillary Rich, Taylor Robinson, Kinsey Schmitt, Chelsea Simmons, Rachel Tabor, Elizabeth Vavra, Raevin Wheeler Morgan and Devan.
I keep being prevented from attending a jv football game by other commitments, so I'm including their roster this week with the hope that I can see the team in action before their season ends. Jeff Maher is the head coach, assisted by Russ Stark.
The sophomores are Jerrid Pierce, Kenny Pierce, Colin Hotchkiss, Elijah Guillaume, Nick Soler, Shane Burkett, Kyle Tillman, Bryant Rice, Eric Minns, Jeff Clark Aaron Congdon, Jared Schoonerman, Matt VanDeMortel, Caleb Jensen, Trent Jones and Tyler Turner.
The freshmen are Curtis Maslyn, Justin Buttaccio, Nate Pierce, Travis Goodman, Brock Smith, Nick Columbo, Brett Triplett, David Davenport, Colin O'Neal, Brad Combs, Billy Corino, Brad Palermo, Erik VanHooft, Glenn Dowdle, Shayne Wheeler, Justin Huntsman, Travis Bevins, Cory Iddings, Austin Collett, Harley Morales, David Taylor, and Kenney Patane. Zachary Bassett, six feet tall in the 8th grade, is also on this team.
This coming weekend is Homecoming. Most high school teams will be playing at home sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday night.

The girls' modified volleyball team hosted Victor on Monday, October 3, in the middle school gym. This team is very young and inexperienced. Only Alyssa Cheney is back from last year's team; the rest are 7th graders. Coach Deborah Webb's roster includes Julia Coryell, Calla Cummings, Katrina Day, Meghan Plate, Alyssa Smith, Becky Walker, and Sierra Wood.
Victor was more skillful at serving and returning; they won 4 of 5 games by an average of 10 points. Midlakes won the 2nd game, 25-22. This outcome has been the norm so far, but Coach Webb feels this team will get "into the swing" and will be doing better very soon.
The "B" girls' modified soccer team hosted Waterloo on Tuesday, October 4. Both goalies were called into service early, and both made saves, but as time went on our goalie, Stephanie Snyder, was kept very busy. Waterloo put one past the entire defensive line and another rolled through the goalie's hands, giving them a 2-0 lead after one quarter. Cassie Goodman, Jolyne, Kane, and Nichole Mattoon were very active on defense, holding Waterloo to the 2-0 score at halftime.
Waterloo scored twice more in the 3rd quarter. Our offense was more active in the 4th; Emmy Clark, Michaela Raes, and Chelsie Campbell nearly scored. However, with more of an effort on the offensive end, our defense was stretched and Waterloo scored 3 more times for a 7-0 final score.
Besides the above named players, this team's roster also includes Megan Anstee, Andrea Everson, Katie Coston, Breanna Reed, Amber Dingman, Brianna Modzel, Elise Gage, and Rachel Levickas.
The boys' modified volleyball team welcomed Victor on Thursday, October 6, and asserted their dominance right away. This was the fastest paced modified volleyball game I think I've ever seen. We won the first three games by about 10 points each for the sweep. The remaining two "just for practice" games were much closer. Victor won the 4th game, 26-24, and we came back to take the 5th, 15-13.
This team, which has only 2 losses in the season so far, both to Canandaigua, had very little trouble with serving and were quite good at the teamwork needed to return serves. Coach Lisa Pietrocarlo has a mix of returnees and 7th graders, which helps. She released the following roster: Aaron Burnett, Jacob Devoll, Kaleb Devoll, Austin Cummings, Nick DeSain, Glen Schultes, Mark Logan, Chris Lohr, Luke Goodman, and Robbie Munger.
The girls jv tennis team sent 3 teams to participate in the JV Doubles Tournament in Canandaigua last Monday and Tuesday. In the "A" division the tem of Gen Pelletreau and Karissa Gage beat Pal-Mac 8-2, then lost to Newark 2-8 in the second round. Arian Burnett-Farrands and Samantha Hemminger, who usually play singles, teamed up for this tournament but lost to a team from Marcus Whitman, 2-8, in the 1st round.
In the "B" division, Ashley Flye and Ashley Vehec beat a team from Bloomfield 8-6 in the 1st round. They then beat a Mynderse team 8-6 in the 2nd round before losing in the semi-finals to Victor, 1-9. They played a team from Marcus Whitman and won, 8-5, to earn 3rd place in the tournament. Their season is now over.
The golf team finished their season last week also. On Monday the boys traveled to Victor Hills to take on the Victor Blue Devils. Jordan Wilson's 36 and R.C. Weston's 39 were almost, but not quite, enough to carry the team. We dropped that match, 211-213.
Last Thursday, while the nice weather was still with us, they hosted both Marcus Whitman and Penn Yan in the final regular season match. The Midlakes team, with 36 from Jordan Wilson, 37 from Zach Maslyn, and 40 from R.C. Weston, compiled a 211. Marcus Whitman shot 297, Penn Yan came in with 219, giving us wins over both teams.
Those two wins gave Midlakes a record of 7-1 in the league, 10-4 overall. This ties them with Penn Yan for 1st place in the Central Division. An early season close match down in Penn Yan, which we lost, was our only league loss; their only league loss was the one to us last Thursday. This rivalry has been quite consistent in recent years.
Last Friday night the golf coaches met to seed the players for Tuesday's League Qualifier, which will be held at Reservoir Creek Golf Course in Naples. Fortunately it isn't in Penn Yan - we never play well there. Jordan was seeded first and named Player of the Year in the Central Division. Zach Maslyn was seeded 2nd, and R.C. Weston was 19th. Congratulations, guys. Keep calm and do well on Tuesday.
