Midlakes Sports

"They played in the rain" pretty much describes any outdoor sport last week. Consequently I did not see anything outside and relied on coaches for the information included here. I am sorry to say I am stiff enough to begin with and sitting in the rain would not be a good thing.
The golf team was at Reservoir Creek Golf Course in Naples last Tuesday for the league qualifier. Actually, the entire team was not there; we were represented by Jordan Wilson, Zach Maslyn and R.C. Weston, all seniors. Jordan had been named player of the year in the Finger Lakes Central League the previous week and was seeded first. Zach, who was seeded second, and Jordan were both named to the all-league team, while R.C. was the first name on the second team all-stars.
Two guys from other schools shot a 74, setting the bar low for 18 holes. The cut-off to be able to move on was 82. Jordan carded a 79, which tied him for 6th. Zach was right behind him with an 80. R.C. had a bad day and finished out of the running. Zach and Jordan will go to the State Qualifier, which will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester in May. If they "make the cut" there they will go to the State Tournament, held each year at Cornell.
Since the weather and other obligations kept me away from the Homecoming events, I asked Coach Stewart of the jv boys' soccer team to bring me up to date on his team. He responded with the information that follows. We tied Mynderse, 1-1, and then beat a pesky Batavia team, 3-0, on Homecoming weekend. Last Wednesday against Whitman we didn't really even compete, playing the worst game we played in a long time. "We never got off the bus, and they beat on us." As of a week ago, their record was 5-8-2, and they were hoping to turn it on and get to .500. Eighth grader Sean Sweeney has turned into the leading scorer for the team, with 12 as of October 12. Anyone who has seen Sean play any sport can understand why - he is a very passionate and hard-driving competitor.
The boys' volleyball teams hosted Victor last Tuesday, October 11, in a contest pitting the two teams that usually slug it out for the league title. But first the jv match.
In the first game, Midlakes seemed to be simply going through the motions for part of the time. Then some great plays helped us rally from a ten point deficit before we lost, 25-18.
The second game was quite close early. Victor was up by 4 before Midlakes, with the help of some Jake Clyde kills, ran up a ten point lead before relinquishing the serve and allowing Victor a chance to climb back in. We regained the serve with the score 23-19 and won, 25-19. The third game was a virtual see-saw, with lots of lead changes and ties at 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25. We finally won, 27-25.
Someone passed out signs with a volleyball and the word "yes" emblazoned across it as a way to get the crowd ready early for the varsity match. As usual the crowd was very involved, and the best that can be said of the team was that their play was an improvement over the first time we played Victor, early in the season. Unfortunately we lost in three straight. If you read the other papers' sports' pages, you know Victor beat two other teams in three straight last week, so we shouldn't be demoralized. Hopefully we learned a few things to carry into the upcoming sectional competition.
The modified girls' volleyball team hosted Wayne last Friday afternoon. Wayne brought 16 girls; it looked like an army compared with our 8. Plus, they wore those funky socks (tie-dyed, your buddy has the other half of the pair) once common at volleyball matches, now not often seen. It worked for them however.
We lost the first game, 25-10. In the second game we served better and had more consistent returns but lost, 25-18. The third game we did not look good and lost, 25-11. The fourth game was amazing - Midlakes was ahead or tied early, took a five point lead late, and blew it to lose, 27-25. In the fifth game we were down 14-5 when Katrina Day took the ball and served a mini rally that fell short. We lost, 15-9. Julia Coryell really hustled and showed some good reflexes in all five games.
