WE DID HAVE FUN
By Milly Converse

When I was a little girl I lived in the country. We had no electricity or central heat but lived very cozy with coal and wood stoves and kerosene lights plus candles. Doing homework by kerosene lights wasn't the greatest as you had to sit at the table and get real close to it.
We made ice cream with a hand crank freezer (ice and rock salt surrounded the can of ice cream custard). We all took turns manning the crank and couldn't wait for the beater to be removed so we could lick it. Mmm, mmmm, how good that was!!
When we got bored there was Flint Creek nearby, (just a small stream). We'd take off our shoes and socks and wade through the cool water. I can still feel the moss on the slate stones - how cooling! Another fun thing was catching minnows in the creek in a tin can and then we had bait for fishing! What fun!!
Of course, we went to a one-room schoolhouse, where there also was no running water and we had to go to the closest neighbor to get our bucket filled. It was great fun as it took two to carry it back. It was double fun if a boy you cared for went with you (had to explain sometimes why it took so long!).
Another great pastime was catching lightening bugs and putting them in a jar where they'd keep flickering. More fun! We also planted several beans and kept them watered to see whose beans sprouted first.
Yes, we made our own fun and what fun it was. Do you think our kids and grandkids have missed a lot? I think so...
